Seeking advice re "Engine fault" message in Citroen Berlingo

    I had a DPF fault that I could clear but it seemed to trigger whenever the DPF tried to regenerate (after about 30 mins on the motorway). It got a new DPF under warranty but the underlying problem seemed to have been bad injectors though I couldn't tell you exactly why.

    But if/when the code reappears, record the code before clearing it.

    @paul_c123 you were quite correct. The warning came back. This time I have photographed the OBDII code reader screen.

    I am minded to phone a local non Citroen garage for advice unless anyone here has other/better suggestions. Does anyone know what magnitude of cost I might be looking at for a repair?

    You needs to get soot and ash load readings…

    Heres one I did recently on a VAG...

    And ensure the pressure differential sensor is sound.

    I'd look and see if there's a local DPF place to take it to before Citroen. They may be able to force a regen rather than needing to replace parts.

    I was going to try a local non-Citroen garage.

    Having read a little bit online I now know what a DPF is. My understanding is that it is less likely to happen if a diesel car is taken for intermittent long motorway journeys at some speed to allow the DPF to heat up and burn the "soot" off.

    Would it be worth my while to try doing this now, to see if it cures this issue or has the horse bolted?

    It depends on what's going wrong. If it's getting clogged up because it's never getting hot enough to regenerate (burn off), then yes a long run may help.

    If it's going wrong during the regeneration, then you'll trigger the fault code.

    That's just giving you the main generic trouble code. A better, specific diagnostic tool would usually give more details (sub codes) that would further help identify the problem.

    P2002 is basically just the DPF pressure sensor complaining of an errant signal between the upstream and down stream pressure sensors, the actual fault is anyone's guess at the moment.

    It could be the filter is just failing to regenerate properly due to driving habits but I suspect there could be something else like a leak in the exhaust or EGR system is blocked, a faulty sensor or wiring or the filter is damaged.

    Then of course there could be a fuelling issue that is causing excessive soot that the filter just can't handle. This could be a symptom rather than a fault.

    If it was mine, I'd start with an inspection of all the components for damage/leaks. Check EGR operation and the sensor signals and wiring. If all's good I'd then perform a filter load test and take it from there.

    You could waste a lot of time and money sorting the symptoms without sorting the fault, which means the symptoms return sooner rather than later.

    Oh man. This brought back memories of my troubles with my berlingo 3 years ago.
    Good advice and thoughts given in posts here.
    Mine started with ad blue issues. Warning message to say van will not start again in 800 miles. Panic then cleared by garage but came back so new adblue tank and pump.
    Then egr problems.
    Then the orange engine management light and worst of all limp mode. All my OBD readings that i gave to garage , they said were generic and meant nothing. They did their tests , couldn't pinpoint it , reseteted it but it came back and limp mode again ( scary)

    As van had done nearly 250k ,and i was loosing the plot and getting more and more nervous , i part exchanged (as scrap) for a renault van with no adblue. One year later the orange engine light is on with loss of power going up hills and then full on limp mode. (again scary) Was more geared up on reading about DPF this time so took to DPF specialist. They hooked it up to their diagnostics and it was clogged with soot , even though i drive on motorway every day. Cost to do was high , maybe was £500 hundred to do a deep clean but is still going well since.

    Not saying that what's going on here , could be anything as Goudy and others say. Just seems a bit more than a DIY job to work out what's going on.

    Just to report back. We phoned a local garage and they advised getting some DPF cleaner, putting it in the diesel tank and then driving for 10 miles on the motorway at high revs eg 50mph in 3rd gear.

    I did this but the error was still showing.

    I phoned the garage back and they said I need to delete the code and see if it comes back. So I deleted it and was delighted to find the car started with no error message. Have been on a couple of short journeys on a couple of days since.
