I'll let you know Tasty 🙂

Gee Farway where were you when I was curious 3yrs ago 😉 online recipes are so complicated no wonder people don't cook these days.

Right I'm clearing out into bags, and storing what I think may be needed. Thing is, could be one week or three months before it happens and how much I can manage but no point taking chances. I don't know when I can do things from day to day so getting ahead - maybe. 😵‍💫

Preparation as you are doing is definitely the key. And I know this is MSE but sometimes you just need to throw money at it. When the proverbial hits the fan then we do what we need/have to do. Have you thought about where your kettle is sited. An op I had many years ago meant I couldn't reach out to the kettle so moved it to a more accessable location. Things like that can make things easier.

I am using a slightly deeper pyrex bowl with a 700w microwave, so I just put milk in hit 3 minutes and walk away. I leave it to cool down a bit before eating, I prefer mine tepid, I think it has more flavour at that temperature.

OP if you are coming straight home after op you will need someone to stay with you for 24 hours.

I changed to a hot cup machine, and just fill it with a jug. I found when ill or when my back was regulary out, I really struggled with the kettle, and it felt very unsafe.

My husband had a hernia op before xmas (keyhole version), he found that pouring things like tea, or even picking a plate up with arms extended was extremely painful, and was terribly weak at reaching out at anything, he had to eat off a lap tray. We'd got him jigsaws etc to keep him occupied and it was a month before he could sit and bend a bit to do them.

Thanks Spikeygran. I've just had a conversation with a friend who has just had the procedure done.

She reckons I won't be hungry for the first few days but toast non stop and I should be able to do that which is a relief. But everyone is different so it's all good to know. She's also offered to help as she'll be able to drive when I get out. But again, always good to be prepared 🙂 so every bit of info helps for whatever is round the corner.

Oh and I don't have to buy big Keck's Brie 😄

@Farway the (semi) skimmed is cheaper because they can make more money selling the cream separately.

With fresh milk, although the selling price is the same for all types, the cost price to the retailer is much higher for whole than skimmed. Effectively, people who buy skimmed are subsidising those who buy whole.

What about the costs of "skimming" it.

It all gets skimmed then the cream added back in known quantities.

I have been using UHT milk for several years. I find its fine in tea, coffee etc, and even for cooking

I use seni-skimmed, but as I don't drink milk on its own I can't tell you what its like. I can't taste any difference between UHT and fresh to be honest. I usually buy either Sainsburys or Tescos it depends what shop I'm in

I now live and house share with my daughter and son-in-law and keep a carton of long life in the small fridge in my bedroom for my morning cuppa, and it keeps very well, but downstairs I drink fresh milk with my family.

I snaffled a carton of 6 cartons of semi skimmed UHT a few weeks ago from Tescos for just over £3.00 as the outside box they were in was damaged ,their expiry is November this year so I have plenty for my cups of tea in bed in the morning, or during the night if I wake up

I have a small kettle which I keep filled with fresh water daily in my bedroom to save me traipsing up and down the stairs :)

Apologies but I haven't read anyone-else's contributions, so if this is a repeat I am sorry. As someone with sensitive tastebuds, I can report that the "cooked" taste of most long-life milks is due to the cream content. If you buy long life skimmed milk, it does not have that taste.
