Fresh ? and a use by date in May, does not really compute with me.

    Good luck Sammy🙂

Some good ideas but I'm stocked to the hilt with tins and soon frozen meals so a Tesco delivery would be milk and bread only. I'll stock up with fresh milk but being in sitting around all the time it will go faster.

I'm hoping bread I can ask a neighbour to get (We're all in the wars) but milk is heavy.

I'll have a look at oat milk. It's bearable. And the lactose free.

    Thanks everyone 🙂

I was going to say I would be more worried about bread but can understand the weight problem. I picked up my normal milk on the 2nd & it was dated 12th. That should last longer than the 10 days. Perhaps just one emergency pint would get you to 2 weeks & turn the fridge down a notch.

I confess that when I was out of action for 4 weeks I admitted defeat & had tesco deliveries. The budget suffered but the diet did not. Sometimes you just have to grin & bear it.

I find bog standard 4 pinter keeps a fortnight in the fridge this time of year, maybe not in sultry August perhaps

I have semi skimmed UHT, prefer full fat but it's twice the price for some reason, and both are nothing like real milk so to my mind I may as well save some money

Getting shopping deliveries, Asda, Tesco etc and just biting the extra cost bullet for a few weeks could be the easiest solution

"Interesting thought about cereal, I was thinking of that instead of my usual toast but it will take up fresh milk. So I'll shop for microwave porridge 😐"

Bog standard oats are fine nuked, Water is OK, but 50/50 UHT /water is OK. Add some honey, fruit, sugar, marmite🤮, whatever once completed

Wonderful advice and experience. Thank you 🙂

I might experiment with oats in the microwave. Meant to do that for years. I doubt I'll be able to wash up for a few days. Hopefully they'll keep me in for a night being on my own then someone else will cook.

On to big trousers and underwear because apparently I'll blow up like a whale for a few weeks 😄

Might I suggest that instead of microwave oatmeal (which I don't like frankly) that you try "overnight oats" otherwise known as birchler muesli.

Get one of those microwave soup pots, put an inch of oatmeal in it, some fruit (I have used frozen raspberries but also tinned peaches or mandarin) and then top with some yoghurt. Leave overnight in a cold kitchen if using frozen stuff otherwise in the fridge if your kitchen is warm. The oats soften overnight with the fruit juice and "water" from the yoghurt. Give it a stir, too thick add some fruit juice, too much to eat, save it for the next day. Saves standing around stirring oatmeal or waiting for the microwave to ping.

Alternative is to get muesli bars - my preference is the Nature Valley maple syrup ones. One of those and cuppa is a relatively decent breakfast and no washing up really. yes muesli bars are full of sugars etc but so are microwave pots.

Talking microwave - what about some of those one serving Heinz beans? Again no washing up. That and toast can make an easy meal.

If you're going to be pretty immobile do you have a key safe? It would mean you don't have to get up to open the door for a delivery from a friend as they can ring and ask for the pin and you can text it to them. Likewise if you have any visiting medical types. Or if, but hopefully not, you should fall and need to call for assistance.

I'm loving that you know the local cows names. We have a couple of dairies locally that have milk machines where you fill up your bottles (cheap at £1.20 a litre) and I think it's the best stuff this side of the alps (nothing beats high alp milk). If that's the stuff you are used to I would really suggest you go for full fat in pint bottles. Unopened in a good cold fridge it should last right up to the BBD and about 5 days beyond. And it would be easier for friends to deliver being lighter than a big bottle.

Big trousers? Sweatpants are very expandable and can be tightened in. As for knickers you're on your own with that one!!

Hope it all goes well and you mend quickly.

I always have some skimmed long life in the cupboard in winter in case of snow and ice

I tried Sainsbury's own make and I honestly couldn't tell any difference from fresh...and I actually drink milk.

    It's vastly improved

Ah yes, I forgot the muesli bars! I used to keep them in stock but so many years not walking. Good thinking. I'll get some in. Bedside drawer 🙂

Yes I used to do that with oats and fruit. But it still means preparation. I'm on the short side so sitting and preparing is very tricky. Apparently I'm getting shorter too!

It's not knowing and on your own no chance of 'oh I forgot'. Have to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

I have a couple of bread mixes and bread maker if desperate. Must get the bread maker out before in case that helps anyone else.

Luv sadly no Sainsbury's within 50 miles.

Tastes fine IMO, I'll often use the 69p semi skimmed ones, can't tell much difference compared to fresh milk these days

Nuked porridge. nuke uncovered and pause to stir it.

I've tried both the soak overnight then nuke and make fresh and nuke. The overnight is slightly smoother

    Add fruit etc after nuking

Ratio is 2 liquid to 1 porridge, by volume [cup, mug etc]

Use uncovered wide topped cereal bowl, the one you will eat it from

Zap a minute, stir, continue zap & stir, takes about 3 minutes, continue until you get to the consistency you like, or you have a lava flow of boiling porridge 😮

Good idea on bread maker & mixes,
