If your friends were in the same state as you at the end of the night then I doubt they would remember anyway. You all had a great night and it is easy to say 'it's on me, or I'll pay' when you've had too much to drink, so I would put it down to experience, as long as you can afford it, and next time drink a bit less, keep quiet and just pay for your own meal, unless one of your friends says 'it's my turn this time' 😅.

If normally everyone pays their share, then ask two ppl separately what happened the night as you blanked out including how you got home, and see if the stories align. If you offered, then that's your sign to not overdrink

Friends might have thanked the originator of this MMD - but if they can't remember getting home, I doubt they'd remember being thanked…

I'd like to be friends with the OP 😆

  • If you said you would pay in an inebriated state, then your friends will understand if you ask for some reimbursement. I guess a non-confronting way to ask would be to state your mistake and ask if they can help cover without stating they have to pay exactly their share, just ask for some help with the bill.

How many of these made up stories are there?

I'm of the opinion that these "dilemmas" are all so irredeemably dull that they probably describe actual events.

Decent made-up stories would begin something like

"I woke up at 06:00 a.m. in a brothel in the Old Port of Marseille after a quick pint after work….."

    According to MSE:

"Unfortunately the MSE team can't answer Money Moral Dilemma questions as contributions are emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be a point of debate and discussed at face value.

Remember that behind each dilemma there is a real person so, as the forum rules say, please keep it kind and keep it clean".

Here is a link to previous MMDs going back to 2022 - if you want to lose a few weeks you'll never get back…

Money Moral Dilemmas | The archive — MoneySavingExpert Forum

    MSE post one every week.

One author of a MMD came back to explain the full submission so at least one is real.

MSE strip out the majority of information with the intention of creating a 'point of debate'.

Sound like you had an amazing evening! Trust your friends and be honest about not remembering - if they legitimately agree that you said you'd pay that's fine, but they must also have noticed that you were a little worse for wear. If they are true friends they will offer to pay their way, even after the event, and you get the chance to accept or decline when clear-headed!
