Stopping card for one non-payment

I suppose it depends on exactly what was said - if it was "under clause n of the Ts & Cs, we will always notify" then that would be a somewhat stronger case than a more casual "we'd usually try to contact you" or the like!

I dont have a dd in place cos for 99.9 % of the time i pay in full every month. This was a blip. When I queried the stoppage I was told I should have had an email or a telephone call. This didnt happen and now NW are saying that it is not obliged to. Can't be bothered to check to be honest as I have never had this experience before with any card provider. In my view NW not being customer focussed on this one. Will be reducing usage now as other cards are now in place. Shame cos I've had a good relationship for over 40 years with other accounts with them. Shot their own foot!!

I clear every month in full. One error. Good job I had other card.

You can have the DD to clear the whole amount or have a DD that just does the minimum payment and you after top to the full amount if you dont want to 100% of the time pay it all off in full.
Life happens, it's sensible to have the DD as a simple safety net.

Just set up the DD to cover it or the minimum payment, rather than doing it manually as I presume you are.

A DD serves as a backstop against just such an error.

You'd get charged the fee for an unauthorised overdraft, whether they would still make the payment I don't know
In terms of DDs, Santander take them early, my due date for the CC is 23rd bit I have had it 20th and 21st often e.g. this month should have gone Monday, they took it Friday. Statement is clear it is due 23rd. Barclays vary it but at least tell you by email
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Santander always take the DD before the due date but that collection date is always shown on the statement and is the working day before. There are others that do the same, I think Virgin do.

It will usually be dependent on your internal credit rating with the bank.
Some people will have payments automatically declined later that day if they don't deposit funds and some people will be allowed an informal overdraft.
