All modern phones come unlocked for years

Samsung A17 5G £109 at Giffgaff.
IMO, that is the best deal for around £100 at the moment.
Click See all plan
Select £10 per month 20GB monthly rolling.
Just don't active the SIM card if you don't want to sign up with Giffgaff.

No phone sold in UK is locked nowadays. Government changed the law.

yes, important it is unlocked, new ones will be. It just means you can use any sim from any network in it.

Thanks, i have now bought a Samsung Galaxy A17 thanks for all your wonderful advice…i even authenticated for UK Security Clearance on it …and it worked first time, so thanks to all!
Next for the Greggs App (wow!)…will be difficult to scan it in Greggs though though as i dont have a phone contract…i just use it in my home and connect to my internet router there..or in free railway station wifi.

Most shops have Wi-Fi, so I would be surprised if Greggs didn't.
Indeed a quick Google search suggests Greggs has had Wi-Fi since at least 2012.
That being said you don't need it anyway - - "the QR code requires a mobile signal to load the first time before use, but once loaded it will continue to work whether you have connection or not. Before heading into your local shop, we’d advise loading your QR code to make sure it’s ready to scan. If your QR code won’t load, click the 'get new code' on your app scan screen. Mobile signal is required to view the latest stamp and reward data on your app home screen."

Maybe I'm wrong or out of date but….
Only a very occasional Greggs customer but I seem to remember having to refresh the QR code after waiting a few minutes in the queue to get served sometimes?? As I have unlimited mobile data it has never been an issue.
Maybe that was a while back and the FAQ you quote is current (and accurate)??
Are shops free WiFi as common as the used to be? I get the impression they are being done away with or not updated as mobile data becomes the norm. Security risk too by and large?

I'd say yes, it's expected now in any of the main chain stores. Of course, my mobi has a Tailscale VPN client so they can't snoop on my traffic.

I don't get why you think these older operating systems are obsolete regarding browsers. Duck Duck happily runs on my Galaxy S6 Android 7.0, as does Firefox and Chrome.

Mozilla upgraded the minimum OS requirements for Firefox on Android last year:
https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2025/09/15/raising-the-minimum-android-version-for-firefox/ - "Beginning with Firefox 144, the minimum supported Android version will increase to 8.0 (Oreo) … If your device runs Android 7 or earlier, or if you rely on Firefox for a 32-bit x86 device, Firefox 143 will be the final version available to you. You will still be able to use that version, but it will no longer receive updates"Chrome hasn't supported Android 7 since November 2023. The minimum requirement now is Android 10, as support for Android 8/9 was dropped last year.
Duck Duck (Go?) requires Android 8 as a minimum.
They might "happily run" now but they'll be well out of date from a security point of view…
