Android phone cant get Greggs App
Hi,
I wrote to Greggs about this but no reply. My Android phone (bought new in 2018) won't get the Greggs App. It downloads it but when asked to "create account" it gives me an error message saying "you have not filled out all the required fields"….but i filled in everything i could. Its a Samsung SM-J330FN. It uses Android 9.
It does look like its possibly not properly downloaded the form that needs filling in……there are two checkboxes near the bottom which dont seem to have any text with them.
Do you know what is the problem?
I downloaded the Mcdonalds App, and other Apps fine.

It looks like Android 9 has been End of Life for some time, time to upgrade your phone / O/S I doubt Greggs will even consider looking at an EOL OS. Its not had a security update for 4 years. Obviously if you just use it for Greggs and MacDonalds Points probably fine but mobile banking , cards stored ?…

I fear you can't see the wood for the trees.
The phone released nearly a decade ago on Android 7 (updatable up to Android 9 in 2018).
For reference, we are on Android 16 at the moment, with Android 17 in current beta expected to be released this year.
As @caprikid1 hints, it's probably time to start looking for a new device.
You don't need to spend tons of money (if that's your hesitation) - you can pick up a Samsung A16 new for under £100, running Android 14 and updatable for 6 OS upgrades (so theoretically to Android 20).Know what you don't5 -
just buy a cheap modern android around £100 which will have Android 13/14 on it
Moto G35 is £98 on amazon

Thanks, i updated it to Android 9….is there no way i can update it to Android 16?….or some higher O/S that will allow Greggs App etc.
The phone does allow me on Google Wallet and i uploaded a card to it and it seemed to do that ok…i havent used it t pay for anything though….seems strange that the Greggs App needs higher O/S than Mcdonalds.
I guess Amazon is the best way to buy a new Android phone?…or Currys?…or Argos?

Be nothing strange about it whatsoever. Different apps have different features. And no, if you have already had to update it up to 9 its certainly going to get nowhere near 16.

My app checker says the Greggs app will run on Android 7 and above. Your photos show webpages, so the issue could be when the app hands off to your browser. Default phone browsers do become incompatible over time.
You could try installing a modern browser and making that the default browser, which might render the page correctly. It's worth a try. At least that's a bit more money-saving than buying a new phone.
I use and would recommend duckduckgo browser which says it runs on Android 8 or above (I've used it successfully on Android 9-16).

No it's not possible, phones are limited on what version they can officially upgrade to, as I mentioned the SM-J330FN can be updated to Android 9. (To prevent someone correcting me - it is technically possible to flash newer stock android ROM's onto old devices, but please don't go down this rabbit hole, it is complicated, risky and usually causes a myriad of compatibility issues).
The reason they are officially limited isn't gatekeeping or to get you to buy a new device, newer versions require better hardware and more memory to run, so an old phone would run very slowly and unpredictably if it were possible to update it to a modern day OS.
For example, your phone has a quad core processor whereas most modern day phones have an octa core processor, your phone has 2GB RAM, whereas most modern phones have 4GB as the bare minimum. As I said earlier, I fear you can't see the wood for the trees and you've also missed the point @caprikid1 made - the OS has stopped receiving security updates for many years. It wasn't for you to prove that you could use banking apps or add cards to it - it was to warn against the risk of doing so.
I guess Amazon is the best way to buy a new Android phone?…or Currys?…or Argos?
All of those are reputable retailers (though you should pay some attention to who the actual seller is on Amazon, as it is not always Amazon).

Greggs App is apparently supported on Android 7 and up. McDonalds apparently only works on Android 10 and up.
However I suspect most apps that work in this way that involve a separate account creation are just basically web browsers in new clothing, and this is probably optimised/intended for more recent versions of Android - I believe Android has some basic web browser technology built in as standard for apps but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it only ever gets updated when the Android version gets bumped - which for a 2017 phone won't be past Android 9 which is out of support anyway.
There's a couple of ways to do this developer wise and f Greggs may be using the more modern methods which will increasingly rule out older devices.

I don't think this will work.
For example, I use Chrome as the default on my phone, but if I click on a link in Messenger, it opens in a different browser inside the app. If I check this browser using whatismybrowser.com it refers to the app, not Chrome.
AFAIK there is no way for a user to change the browser that is loaded inside apps.
I presume the browser used by apps (generally for registering or logging in), is built-in to Android. I suspect that is the crux of the OP's problem.

Your Android OS is clearly in Diet mode which is under health settings.
Have you been able to create an account on Greggs webpage, then use those credentials on your phone
I use an old phone and as there is likely a protected class or two who can't afford to update their phone you could ask Greggs to make reasonable adjustments by creating an old version that works.
Some apps do this on my phone.
I had an issue with one app where they said it was because Apple no longer provided security updates but that was total BS as I had one about 2 weeks ago.
Ironically I found that when I used the web portal of that app it was far better than the app, then the webpage was updated and it is now just as awful as the app was.
