In a few months though when I go up a level, I can opt to contribute 6% for which my employer contributes 8%. I have had a good think and have decided to leave it well alone - the contributions have been made since I joined and as such the money isn't missed in any way.

    Thanks again guys xx

I think that you should probably contribute 6% to get the extra free money from your employer. You could check this on the pensions board.

However, I've been involved in many threads like this on this board - MFW vs ISA etc so in the end I appreciate everyone has their own take on things. People become highly motivated in their quest to be MF:D More so than adding to their pension..:D

Glad to hear the discussion has helped, it's what this board is all about, and that you have both indeed got a good balance overall.

hi, when you over pay on the mortgage what percentage goes to paying the interest if any?

e.g say i owe 100k and overpay 1000 pounds will my balance be 99k?

It would be if you had a mortgage of 0% but assuming you haven't then the bank/building society will add interest onto the amount you owe. Take a look at the mortgage calculators at the top of this thread. I use https://www.jeacle.ie

so say if i made an over payment of £100 next month will a percentage of that be paid as interest thus not knocking anything of the total mortgage balance?
  • Good Afternoon All,

Just a quick update to let you know that I have increased our OP to £550 per month from 1 March - :D to that!

The past four weeks have been quite costly - there is a big family wedding coming up so we have had hen and stag do's to pay for, and we have booked our fabby holiday :D . But we are saving even more money on groceries by batch-cooking and meal planning - if only cat food were cheaper though, it seems to get more expensive every week  x

Perhaps that's why our groceries average spend per week is now £82 for food and drink for two adults, an 11yr old plus the re-homed cat? There was me worried it was the alcohol and spend at Christmas which put it up!

  • Hi everyone

Quick update from me. The mortgage statement has arrived and as at 31 December we owed £98.796.11. We are going to maintain the OPs of £550 per month, and I will be able to increase these further from September once I get a salary increase.

I have done a review of our current account and all direct debits are in order. I have gone through comparison sites today and checked we have still got the best deal for everything, which is pleasing. We are having some work done on the house this month which ideally we would like to be able to pay for from our wages without dipping into savings or the OPs. With this in mind, we have stocked up on lunch items to take lunch to work everyday, and have got a few cheap/free things planned for the next few weeks. When the work is done it will be fantastic, but skip hire prices are making my teeth grind at the minute! x
