I did one last month as an online request. I almost didn't because I worry about the security of personal data issue, but I had an ISA maturing and was busy and the Coventry one seemed like the easiest for me to use as it was a decent rate and I am an existing member. So I took the risk. As usual I received the letter, which states

" Please read the confirmation of your request overleaf and check the details are correct"

and overleaf it lists all the personal details that it holds online about you.

This feels completely unnecessary to me and I have fed back my feelings about it to Coventry previously.

After the transfer had gone ahead I received another letter "Confirmation of your ISA tax declaration" which contained the same personal information overleaf bar e-mail address and telephone numbers.

I wonder why some customers are receiving these letters and others aren't. On this occasion I was happy to receive the letters as I know what to expect from them and if I hadn't received them I would have been fretting about them having gone astray. In future I think I will do without the worry and just give Coventry a miss.

Previously when I contacted Coventry to see if there was any way to circumvent receiving such letters containing so much personal information I was told there wasn't a way.

Not a great set of questions, but my initial view was that all current plus £10,000 from the previous years.

I opened Coventry fixed rate ISA online and completed online transfer form. Transfer took place 3rd Feb, letters arrived 5th Feb confirming the opening and the transfer. Transfer value was exactly as requested.

    All as fuzzzzy describes

Yes - clearly this happens to some people but not all it seems.

I was merely warning people that this could happen.

I used to live in a block of flats with communal letter boxes outside - and people regularly got post stolen from them. At least one neighbour of mine suffered very significant identity fraud as a result.

I asked Coventry why they felt it was necessary to send all this very personal data on the back of a letter in standard post just to confirm an isa transfer. They said it was a legal requirement (total nonsense of course!) and they could not understand why anyone would be concerned by their lax use of their customer's data.

It may not happen to everyone - but clearly it happened to you and me!

I applied online - I don't live anywhere near any of their branches so my contact with them is only online.

But Coventry still sent this out to me anyway.

It is their choice to do the equivalent of chopping down a tree everytime some customers - but not all - open an account with them.

I do wonder whether this is related to paper-free settings and the failure to apply a sensible default when you open a new account.
