Android Auto

Hi.

Our 2023 Hyundai i10 SE Connect doesn't have dedicated SatNav, but does have Android Auto (and Apple Carplay). When I collected the car, I Bluetoothed my phone to it so I could make hands-free calls, and then set the SatNav for 'Home'. Offski I wentski.

It's only just occurred to me that the Infotainment system was using my phone for this? Blimey - it's clever. I don't even have 'Auto' on the phone, just Google Maps.

Or am I confused - does the car have the actual App actually downloaded on to it? Does the car have a GPS antenna?

Ta.

AA has been part of Android Operating system since Android 10, so it is no longer a standalone app. To change any AA settings, on phone Settings > Apps > Apps Management > find AA & take it from there.

No, the car does not have the app on it. It is just using screen mirroring off you phone & would guess GPS on phone as well.

Car is using WiFi to connect to phone, unless your phone is connected by cable to car.

Android Auto is built in to recent Android versions , think it's from Android 10, so it's likely your phone was providing the google maps data which is displayed on the car screen.

The cars system needs the software to connect to the Phone and set up Android Auto, Android Auto uses bluetooth to then set up a wifi hotspot for communication from phone to car, sounds like you car has that software.

If it's all just worked by pairing your phone via bluetooth you're lucky as it can be very buggy with some car systems.

Try it without connecting your 'phone- switch it off of or put the 'phone in aeroplane mode.

If the car still navigates, then it has a built in GPS & Satnav.

Both my cars have stand alone Satnav, when I connect Android Auto I can also select the navigation apps on my 'phone- waze is best for its more accurate speed limits and pop-ups about large potholes/cars that look like Police cars/speed camera vans etc.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

It's not screen mirroring. That's a different thing.

The car probably has it's own gps antenna. It's a seamless switch anyway if it doesn't it will use your phones

    Thanks, all.

I checked it today. Yup, if I disconnect the phone - a Pixel 6 with Android 16 - then it disappears.

Wow, I am seriously impressed! There is no indication on the phone itself of what's going on - other than initially confirming it's connected (via BT, I guess).

No idea if the GPS part is in the phone of the car - I'm curious about this, tho' it's not a biggie.

So, if I want to change some settings - and the biggie would be to add 'Speedometer' and 'Speed Limits' to the screen - this will be done via what, do you reckon - the phone or car?!

If the phone, it would be through what?!

    Cheers 🙂

I believe the GPS signal comes from the phone. So, its worth plugging it in while using satnav, just because battery life will be lower when its running.

There is another thread but Google Maps shows some speed limits. Often they are wrong though so its a bit useless. Any other app would also need to be Android Auto capable. I don't know about Android Auto but only a small number of apps are Apple Carplay capable, but this tends to be the nav ones like Tom Tom, Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps; and the music streaming ones. Whatsapp is capable too (and text messaging).

Does your car have a manual or handbook, either physical or electronic?

It comes from either the phone or the car. Depending on whether there is one in the car which there probably is.

OP's car does not have a built in sat nav. It relies on either AA or ACP for any navigation features vis a phone connection
