I got £4,850 out the last time I was executor, without needing Probate - I was getting it anyway, as it happens, but it meant the money was relinquished much sooner. She'd actually reduced her holding to under £5k, after needing Probate for her own husband a couple of years earlier - only for PBs and a small tranche of shares she had to sell - so that helped us out.

The estate I dealt with had way over £5k in premium bonds and Probate was NOT needed by NS&I.

From the NS&I site, note the "We may ask"

"We will let you know if we need a Grant of Representation (also known as a Grant of Probate or Grant of Letters of Administration) once we receive your completed form. We may ask for this if the customer's total NS&I savings are £5,000 or over. The Director of Savings also reserves the right to request a Grant of Representation for savings of any value."

on the bereavement form I need to send to NS&I it asks for the Account number of the premium bonds- do they mean the Holders Number?

Does it have little squares to put the digits in? The holder number, from memory, is shorter than the NS&I number, so that might be a clue - but it seems that generally PB stuff asks for the Holder no.

it lists all their various types of accounts and at the side is just a long blank box to enter the "Account Number"

If you have any "congratulations you have won" letters from NS&I it will have both the premium bond holders number and the NS&I number.

In my case the bond holders number is 8 digits and a letter. The NS&I number is 11 digits.

Possibly if they never registered for online access they would not have been issued with an NS&I number …
