    Yes, I agree.

As I mentioned earlier, the whole upscaling thing will breathe new life into standard DVDs anyway.

I have to say I'm with tomstickland on this, much as I love technology I never buy it when it first comes out. It's just too expensive and you know that a couple of years down the line it will be half the price and twice as good. We only got a widescreen CRT Telly last year and that was because someone at work spent £1000 on a plasma. Fun nily enough I work in a reasonably high tech job as well.

I've seen HD and whilst it is good I really can't justify spending hundreds of pounds on new equipment despite having a HD source already (Virgin V+). By the time I get a HD TV and player they'll be dirt cheap and people will be arguing about the next format war.

i think most people will wait until standard dvd is virtually dead.

I think that I may do this. As an avid collector, I have a vast collection of standard DVD's. I may wait until the Blu-Ray technology is as affordable as DVD's are now before I commit. Unless I win the lottery and can afford to replace my whole collection that is!!
people will be arguing about the next format war.

Ahhh you mean the old 3D hologram TV? Let the battle commence lol.

i think people will be quicker to transfer over coz the new players will most likely play their old dvds. its not like transfering over to dvd from vhs. the prices need to come down though. i guess it wont be too long in the future before we are buying the star wars boxset yet again.

The players will allow you to play standard DVD's. It would be a massive 'cut off their nose to spite their face' moment if any company didn't budget for this. In todays minimalistic age, no-one would want to have to have 2 DVD players under their noce flat screen tellies. And a lot of people have vast standard DVD collections.

Blu-Ray prices will adjust accordingly, and hopefully sooner rather than later!

I won't be buying the Star Wars boxset again! I have a vast DVD collection that I have spent a fortune on. I refuse to 'upgrade' all that I already own. I will only buy the HD telly and Blu-RAy player when the dust settles and even then, I may not buy the DVD's until they are priced more affordabily. I think the current DVD format is well watchable and will be dirt cheap and there will be bargains galore to be had.

I think I may adopt a policy of buying older films on the standard format and the new releaes on the HD format. All hearsay at the moment as I don't have the equipment, but a man needs a plan!

they didnt mind forcing people to replace all their videos when they got rid of vhs and replaced it with dvd. however it is likely that they will play dvds so that isnt likely to be an issue.

i've not really got much of a dvd 'collection' so to speak. I'm wondering whether an upscaling DVD player would be close to being as good as blu-ray

    that depends on
    a. the machine doing the upscaling
    b quality of source
    c. quality of tv
    d your eyes
in short not really but if u think it is then thats ok as well and it saves u £350

They may stop making standalone DVD players over time, but as you say any the new players will play the old DVD's anyway - So problem averted! They may stop releasing the std DVD format over time, who knows?

As mdbarber says - It won't compare to Blu-Ray quality. You may as well wait until the dust settles and the players become affordable, then splash out on the best quality player you can afford. That's what I'm doing anyway! ;)
