Last time I tried to use a VPN for watching the Beeb or Now TV in Europe both sites blocked it. It was ExpressVPN.
Does anyone have recent experience (good or bad) with watching/streaming such content abroad?
It annoys me that I've already paid for the platform services (TV LIcense, Now TV subscription) but I'm still blocked and made to feel like a criminal for trying to watch!

It's far from a uniquely BBC problem, many other services like HBO, Peacock, Fubo etc are region locked. The issue is that these firms sell their content to firms like Sky for them to have exclusive rights to broadcast say Game of Thrones (HBO) in the UK so need to make at least modest attempts to stop people from bypassing this exclusivity and watching it on HBO in the UK. BBC is the same, it sells its content to overseas broadcasters
Express has enough outs that if you do find one is being detected as VPN that you can switch to another and 95% of the time that one works fine.1 -
Proton + iPlayer OK in Europe (or it was late-'25).la531983 said:Proton I've had no issues with, paid version of course.
The streamers (especially the big US ones) will often block connections that they know are coming from known VPN addresses, the VPNs will change their addresses, the streamers catch up, so it continues.1 -
NordVPN works with iplayer, sky and nowtv in Europe (as of Nov 2025)..1

Just out of interest, does the fee you paid cover watching the associated services from UK or Worldwide?sausage_time said:

EDIT:
Now TV website says this:
3.1.1 You may only access the content and services in the UK (including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man).

Albeit I'm using Surfshark from within the UK (set to a UK city), iPlayer doesn't seem aware that I'm using a VPN.1

That's clear enough.Grumpy_chap said:

And for BBC iPlayer, from this page
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/help/questions/watching-outside-the-uk/outside-ukDue to rights agreements, you need to be in the UK to stream and download programmes or watch BBC TV channels on BBC iPlayer. So OK for some use cases.
Want to watch an on-demand programme while you're travelling? If you download a programme when you're in the UK, you can watch it anywhere in the world. You can download programmes on your mobile or tablet using the BBC iPlayer app.
Not clear what might happen if someone inadvertently streamed or download a program for personal use on either platform while outside the UK and on a VPN.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Credit Cards, Savings & investments, and Budgeting & Bank Accounts boards. Another vote for Windscribe. Free up to 10GB a month but annual fee is good value if you get one of their offers that come up now and again. It saves getting the annoying adverts on the BBC website when looking for sport or news from abroad.1

Nothing. They can block the vpn, but theres no way to tell where viewers are located, and many people use one within the uk for perfectly legitimate reasons.sausage_time said:
