I want a cheap Sim only contract for emergency second phone.
I work regular 12hr nights. I usually turn off my 'phone when I am in bed and if anyone really needs me they ring on the landline.
The problem is, after changing broadband provider we don't have a landline.
I want a sim only deal that I can use in my old mobile so my family can get in touch if need be.
I want one that doesn't have a contract or an expiry date.
Does any one do such a thing?
Thanks in advance.

Lebara currently do a SIM that is £1.58 a month, only tied in 30 days at a time.
Not much data on it though, 1GB can be eaten through very quickly so with no broadband you would have to ensure any apps that eat data arent used.0 -
1p Mobile do SIM only and it's £10 for 8 weeks.
Very easy to read website to check your credit and they promptly respond to emails. Very helpful.
Top ups are automatic and you can get email or text to tell you when this will happen.
There are bundles.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Using a separate phone and SIM sounds a very clumsy way of achieving your aim.
Is your phone Android?
The 'Do Not Disturb' function is designed to do what you want and is very flexible. You can set it up in various ways, for instance you can specify that your family numbers can always get through.
You can switch DND on and off as easily as you currently switch the entire phone on and off, but you can also pre-programme it for the exact hours when you are sleeping during the daytime.
Iphones have a similar function.1 -
Personally I think it's important to have a backup phone on a different network.
Covers you for several possibilities.
I try not to have a single point of failure for several important things bank account, credit card, phone etc 🙂0 -
If you have a Smartphone you can change the settings to only allow calls through from certain numbers, during a specified time period - would this not work for your purposes without needing a second phone /SIM?gord115 said:I work regular 12hr nights. I appreciate that you may want to stop calls even from family members as they may not know you are asleep however with iPhone you can set do not disturb so that all calls are blocked unless they ring you twice within 3 minutes. You can then tell your family members that if it is an emergency they need to call you back immediately. I am sure android has something similar0

Why not get a voip setup for home? More outlay to start with but no ongoing costs if it's only receiving calls.gord115 said:I work regular 12hr nights. I usually turn off my 'phone when I am in bed and if anyone really needs me they ring on the landline.

You can effectively have a "landline" as the person above suggests, by plugging a suitable box of electronics into one of the ethernet ports on your router. Voipfone is who I have mine with and they are very helpful and responsive if you have any questions or problems.
You can have a local code number so to callers it looks like an old fashioned landline and the cost would be about £5 per month.
The thing about this arrangement is that it wouldn't work in a power cut like old fashioned landlines would, so it could be argued you'd be better with a cheap mobile for peace of mind0 -
What about this one. As far as I can tell I only need to use it every 6 month.

I suspect this is no longer available from 02 but I have read that you can still buy the SIM cards on Ebay - suspect you'd need to sign up quite quickly before they stop offering the tarriff
