I've just been offered 900 meg for £25 a month fixed for two years (no inflation increase) through Cityfibre.  1.2 gig is £29.

Sounds like a great deal on the 1.2. Which ISP is that through?
Fascinated to know WHY any home user would want or need a 1.2Gb connection ?
Lots of people work from home, and now that everyone streams tv it wouldn't be unusual for a house to have four tvs streaming at once.

The full 1.2Gb speed probably wouldn't be fully used very often, but an increase over the standard 65mb can be quite useful, and it's often not that much more expensive, and can sometimes even be cheaper.
A HD stream is around 5Mb , a UHD stream around 20-25Mb , so even 4 TV’s watching a UHD stream simultaneously ( a highly unlikely scenario) it’s still a drop in the ocean bandwidth wise , if someone wants the fastest speed available, that’s absolutely fine , it’s their money and choice , they don’t need to justify it to anyone, but it’s disingenuous to state it’s necessary…there will be banks , building societies and even call centres that don’t need multi gigabit connections, but you can make the case no one needs a 150MPH  car but people still buy them .

Could it be that those working from home go for top speeds because their employer pays the bill?

There may also be an inference that higher speed = more reliable which of course is not how it works. But at the end of the day these speeds are on our doorsteps and often cheaper than lower speeds with other providers so why wouldn't you!

Just wanted to share an update per my original question that started this thread. CF came this morning and were able to connect me up exactly how I wanted and without any issues. I told them about the blue drawstring right away, they came in and had a look and said no problem at all, pulled through the ONT wire using it and we are good to go. In the end I was worried about nothing and they made it seem pretty easy, all thanks to whoever built the houses and put in that blue drawstring rope at the time!
