Best cream tea scones

In using up (woe is me) a tub of clotted cream, I've inadvertently compared two brands of scones - Tesco finest and coop irresistible. While Tesco's are larger and softer, they tend to fall apart when applying the clotted cream (which by the laws of science and decency, should be applied first). Coops are smaller, but…

Decided to try Sainsbury's finest scones, but made the error of trying a different clotted cream (also Sainsbury's finest), assuming they'd be the same - it's super thick, needed to be prised out of the tub and not pleasant to eat at all.
