Totally FREE Christmas 2026

A very warm welcome to everyone  <3
The object of the Total Free Christmas thread is to think creatively about how to reduce the cost of Christmas down to it's lowest cost which is ultimately totally FREE. Christmas 2026 is no different to 2025 with the exception of a very sad increase of what is know as a living crisis where more and more families are on or below the breadline due to the cost of everyday essentials like energy and food which has risen and continues to rise much faster than average household incomes. For this and many other reasons, it may not ultimately be possible to achieve a totally free Christmas, but we can certainly share creative money saving ideas & free available resources to at the very least reduce the cost of what many now see as the financial burden of Christmas.
I have included the link to the Totally FREE Christmas 2025  as there were a number of creative ideas shared and @ Willowtree222 has already made a wonderful suggestion with saving on expensive 'speciality' Christmas cards as the last post on the 2025 thread for those who don't make their own - Thank you @ Willowtree222 :
This isn't exactly free, but very MSE. Card factory have reduced all single Christmas cards to 5 for £1. I have got all my next year ones including mum and dad and daughter.

There will also be large reductions on gift bags, wrapping papper, boxed cards etc which may be useful to those who haven't re-gifted the Christmas / Gift bags for this year with the presents they have recieved during 2025 or as a general stock up if re-gifted bags are beginning to look a little worn - I've seen gift bags for 5-10p each and rolls of wrapping paper for 20p each, so keep your eyes open, if you're looking for these.
I'm sure that we're all looking forward to sharing any creative ideas or bargains to be had to help reduce the cost of Christmas as best as we can  :)
For those who are looking for Money Saving Challenges throughout 2026 in preparation for Christmas etc, I'm involved in a number of them which you will find in my signature and are available on the MSE forum search facility  ;) ENJOY!  <3

  • Thanks again for this thread. I had some lovely ideas last year from here.

I have got some gifts half-price already for next year and are stored in the loft with my Christmas ideas. I have got all of my family cards (like sister, mum and dad etc) for 5 for £1 this week. Obviously not free, but certainly a lot less than I would have paid.

I ran out of gift bags this year and there weren't many left in the shops, but I did get them for half price.

Willowtree222 - Brilliant! The price of the 'special' cards were around £1.99 - £2.99 each, so 5 for £1 is a bargain, I'd be tempted to get 2 years worth, but that's me. I also think it depends where you are located. I live in a small town that has a new rather large Card Factory shop opened in May, and there seemed to be plenty of items still available today and they'll be even cheaper tomorrow as they need to put out all the Easter goods  ;)

  • Thanks @willowtree222 I also managed to pick up some of the family cards at 5 for £1, they also had money wallets as part of that deal. I picked up boxed cards at 50% off too and some fancy tissue paper. Not a huge lot of sale stock in our shop - valentine cards are out though!

  • I got a couple in one shop and then passed another by chance today and got the remainder. To make up the 5, I did get two years worth of Daughter and mum and dad!! As I only buy special cards now for my closest family. I buy some of the pack of 10 really beautiful ones for the rest of my family (always in the half price sale too).

The Range is also selling a lot of things off. I know it's sale started just before Christmas. On Christmas eve, I had forgotten napkins and DD asked me for something so I nipped in and got napkins for a few pence as well.

  • Not free for next Christmas, but free for now. Lots of Tesco stores are offering free veg as you leave the stores. They are the Christmas left overs but have seen packs of parsnips and carrots and sprouts. Could be cooked and frozen for a few months for stews or dinners.

Just in case anyone needs it.

    Willowtree222 - Super & thank you for sharing  ;)
Not FREE but if needed: The Card Factory Sale continues with 5 quality cards for £1 and I saw gif bags all sizes (Sm, Med, Lrg, X-Lrg) reduced down to 10p per bag locally today. Chrissy paper was 50% off but local staff say should be reduced further on Friday/Saturday - Not FREE but useful to those who just love to save and who will actually need these items through the year / Christmas 2026.
Tomorrow, I shall be regifting, rebagging in recycled/regifted gift bags & tagging with home made Chrissy tags all the non-perishable Chrissy Gifts that are useless for me, personally. All gifts will be placed in a storge box ready for Christmas 2026. As I love to make my cards and also recycle/upcycle cards, I will be making Chrissy cards & envelopes in January 2026 and will write those up and also place in the storage box along with a note of any missing gifts for anyone that I need to think about and will probably make from items in my Art Stash / donated items to upcycle ;)

I have seen a couple of supermarkets and shops selling wrapping paper for 10p and less. Again, not free for next year, but a very good price difference from full price.
I also found some of the candles and other gifts reduced to around £1. I have bought a couple and put away for next year.

Willowtree222 -That's for sharing. The cardfactory have been slinging put wrapping paper for 10-20p but my local CF shop is now sold out. The CF sale ended a couple of days ago as they need to prepare for Valentines Day. Boots still has a 50% off sale which I'm expecting them to reduce in store items further including wrapping paper soon as nothing seems to be selling, certainly not at my local Boots anyway  :o  :#  Not free, but useful for those who may want to Christmas shop & stock ;)
The only thing I'm doing Christmas wise at the moment is finishing off the last of my new handmade outside 6 foot standing Christmas lighted Angel & Peace Dove decoration that I've sculpted from old wire coat hangers; with interlocking parts that actually work :D and then I will begin covering in a selection of material remnants that I either have or have been donated for me to do something creative with before off loading anything left over to one of my local charity shops. As we're due yet more rain here from tomorrow, I'll probably make a start and I hope to finish it by the end of January so that I can get it safely packed away. I did finished off through the night; impossible sleep night for me last night  :/ , 2 brand new Christmas door wreaths made up of left over items from other projects, items others have donated to me, and foraged items; pine cones, sticks etc.
