He has been an electrician for a long time and he has never recommended storage and said that oil filled radiators can keep the heat for a lot longer than storage heaters
That is so wrong it warrants disbelieving anything else he claimed.
Yep I have already sacked him and will not be going ahead with any of his recommendations.
    Excellent decision !
It's scary that someone can be so ignorant about matters quite closely related to his trade.
BTW, does he think the Sun orbits the Earth and that the Earth is flat?

There was another thread on storage heaters where the new heaters were automatically going into boost mode and using expensive daytime electric to maintain the temperature so if you do get a grant make sure that is turned off when it is set up by the installers, or you will be back where you started.
Thanks very much I will make sure of this 🙂
Come back with their proposed model(s) and wiring setup - single live feed or low power live feed and meter restricted feed for main charge elements ?

What meter do you currently have - has it been replaced when you went live panels ?

Survey should check and build that into report / offer.

Beware different manufacturers combi heaters (Quantums, Elnur Ecombi etc) use daytime boost / live 24/7 feed so day rate cost heating components differently.

And its not necassarily best to disable completely - but instead maybe worth turning to min - on some Elnurs - as disables the charge learning iirc if set to 0 hrs / off.

Come back if going ahead and hopefully a user can share their setup advice in more detail.

To put this in simple terms @ your age. I would be more interested in keeping warm at a reasonable cost, than looking at getting a return on any investment on your new heating.

In reality the time to have looked at this, would have been pre buying the flat 🤷‍♀️

I'm not looking for a return on my investment but thanks for pointing out how remiss I have been at not checking it out before buying the flat. I'm already kicking myself 🤦🏻‍♀️
  • Hope you get a qualifying survey, and be cosy next winter, too late for now.
You may have higher usage for about 3 months over the cold winter months, but usage will taper down, so think about the yearly cost per month, it's not going to cost you £££s evert month.

  • Bear in mind that installing GCH may help you get a higher price and sell more quickly when the time comes.  Many purchasers are likely to consider gas more favourably, especially if they have no experience of NSHs.
GCH can also be used during a power failure or rota cut if you have battery backup for the pump and control unit.  If you have a gas cooker, as a last resort you can turn on the hob burners or leave the oven door open.

Unfortunately there isn't room for a heat pump plus my budget really wouldn't run to it
Have you considered fitting a single air-to-air heat pump in you living room?

You can get all in one air to air that look like a very large radiator that only require two six inch holes in an external wall but make sure it is the inverter type otherwise it will not run below zero. Less than a grand plus install (DIY possible as they come with 13 amp plug).

Excuse my ignorance but what are they and how do they work?
