Switching FTTC providers, work required?

  • Ok, so to be clear:

If FTTP is available at my house then the only way to keep my FTTC service is to keep my current my current ISP's deal?

If I go with the Onestream deal then that would be switching to FTTP even though it's not advertised as such?

The consensus I'm getting is that the answer to both is yes.

The only thing that's throwing me is that the FTTP on my street is provided by City Fibre but I'm getting texts from Openreach about confirming their visit and the email I got from Onestream referred to an Openreach engineer.

You were told to put your address into the BTw checker , (this displays what Openreach has available to that address) you did and it clearly shows Openreach FTTP is available…the fact that City Fibre is also available is irrelevant yet you keep bringing it up, Onestream don’t use City Fibre but they do use Openreach .

Cos I had no idea that it was 'also' available!!
Edit - or that it was irrelevant!!

The nature of a forum like this is that people are going to be looking for answers, looking to have the gaps in their knowledge filled in.

If you have actually been able to select and order Onestream Fibre 40 Broadband, then as it quotes UK average speed that certainty relates to the old part-fibre FTTC product.

We will wait for your installation day to see who turns up and what you get.

Sooner or later you will be moved to FTTP whether you like it or not. It won't affect whatever service you're on at that time.

Yeah, that's what I thought and that's why I chose it, and why I was getting confused about being able to stay on FTTC

Easy to check whether you CAN stay on FTTC with a new supplier - use BT Wholesale checker
    BT Broadband

Either search by phone number or address - if the exchange that you are connected to , shows "Fibre priority exchange" in the blurb  ,then you can only stay on the existing product  - personal experience suggests that only your existing ISP will be available.

As already stated , migration between ISP’s  remaining on the same underlying product ( FTTC to FTTC for example) doesn’t need an engineer visit , yet your ISP has arranged one , your ISP documentation of the product you have taken , ( presumably that’s what you have posted here  )  , indicates that you are remaining on FTTC , the common denominator here is your ( not particularly well regarded) ISP , they are giving you mixed messages.

Given this somewhat contradictory information you have from your ISP , it’s impossible to know what will happen until the actual date , the possibilities are you are getting FTTP but the product info the ISP has provided doesn’t match that , Openreach certainly would favour conversion to FTTP and your ISP would be foregoing the financial incentives available to them by putting you on FTTP but chosing not to  , if the ISP doesn’t arrange FTTP  (it’s not compulsory in non priority areas ) why arrange a visit , the fact you are getting a visit via Onestream seems  to indicate it’s a FTTP product you are getting , or  the OR tech gets a FTTC to FTTC job , realises it’s a pointless endeavour and may contact saying there is no reason to visit , so doesn’t , or does still visit as it’s an easy ‘job’ with the expectation you provide them tea and biscuits  , but nothing changes , or no OR tech has ever allocated to this as  it’s always been a shift of ISP connection on FTTC ,

TBH , in all eventualities it seems your choice of ISP is living down to their reputation , the only other possibility I can think of is you are classed as a vulnerable customer and are getting a visit when non is generally necessary because of your vulnerability , but that’s more frequent when the customer is getting a voice service and it’s deemed necessary to help them connect their phone to the router but this doesn’t appear to be the case with you
