Is the Chase Credit Card Better than Halifax Clarity?

I'm trying to slim down some of the different banks I have accounts with.

At the moment, I have a Halifax Clarity credit card, which I use rarely but it's useful when I do use it - most of my spends are on American Express.

The primary reason I got it years ago was the fee free spending abroad, although it's also useful having online banking so if my mortgage is renewed with halifax, then it's there in my account straight away, not that I pay much attention to the mortgage.

But now most cards are fee free spending abroad, especially the Chase one, should I ditch the Halifax and appy for Chase?

I know it seems neither here nor there but it's more about not having so many different accounts with different banks (I am not saying I am putting all my eggs with Chase - [the Halifax CC] is one that I could close leaving me with plenty of options should one bank go down).

  • I have no knowledge of the Halifax clarity card but I have had a Chase card for a couple of years and found it to be excellent abroad. I transfer money onto it for holidays and trips abroad and use it to withdraw cash and to pay by card. As with all cards there is a cash withdrawal limit per day but this has never been an issue for me.

It would depend if the Chase one offers you something extra that would be of benefit to you, or simplifies your finances (say you already had another Chase account so can check 2 cards with one logon)?

I've had my Clarity card for years, mainly for overseas currency transactions, but they also seem to offer an almost perpetual 5.9% APR money transfer option with no fees, which is perfect for fast stoozing any 0% balance transfer cards I apply for, which to me is a big reason to keep mine.

    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

It's always worth having a backup CC especially if travelling and one is Mastercard and the other VISA (and of course AMEX). The chase card offers 0% spending for 15 months which can be very useful. I'd use all of them if there was an advantage

An unique feature of Clarity is no-fee money transfers to a current account. It can be very useful when combined with a 0% balance transfer offer from another CC provider.

At one time I think you could only pay the Chase Credit card from a Chase current account.   For me that would have high nuisance value - I don't use my Chase account now that all debit card cashback benefits are eroded.

Barclaycard Rewards is another option - no FX loading, 0.25% cashback, no interest on ATM advances.

Both my Chase CC and my Halifax Clarity CC are Mastercard. Neither is VISA. Not sure if you meant that one of these was, or simply stating what I believe in too, have one from each network just in case one has issues while away.

Still the case, sadly, for direct debit. Bit of a pain, but nothing one cannot handle tbh.

I believe they have allowed payments from other accounts, but not for full statement balance. I am sure others will correct me if I am mistaken.

I pay my Chase Credit card from HSBC no different than any other non-HSBC credit card and also still have circa 12 months interest free on purchases which beats Halifax Clarity and Barclays Rewards IMO.

I topup either the Chase debit card or HSBC global money card for ATM withdrawals with no charge or issue.
