The parsnips in Asda were all very small and thin, not much good for roasting and the sprouts I bought are wet and slimy' I have spread them out to dry them out. Considering they are the most expensive not very good at all.

Who will be first to pay us to take the veg away?  Dread to think how much will be wasted because people will shop with no inkling of what they are going to do with this bountiful feast.  I made loads of veggie soup today.  Maybe farmers will be queuing up at soup kitchens?  I just hope it is the supermarket fat cats who are taking the hit and not the growers.
Its the supermarket that takes the hit on the reduced prices and hope you do some other shopping while in store.  We waste very little as her indoors is very adept at storing the veg.
A technique that fails when you walk in at 6pm and find the shelves entirely cleared of veg (despite or even because of a sign limiting to 4 per customer). This was in an East London branch of Aldi and they were not happy that I took a picture of the same, which I reassured them would not go on SM. However the intelligence must - if you want veg with your Christmas dinner shop early in the day.

IIRC this is the first year that there has been a limit per customer. Obviously there are ways round this. In my case I live close to many supermarkets so can spread my shopping. I've also seen families split up and pay separately.

It's sad that some people will waste the veg. Personally, I'll store some potatoes but also cook/prep and freeze many of the others.

I'll only be buying one bag of sprouts for DH. 🤮

Don't know about other supermarkets but Lidl had a limit of 3 per item last year.
  • I've just been to Lidl and there didn't seem to be a limit - one person had a trolley basically full of the cheap veg

I was in the reverse position to you @LindsayT in that I bought all the cheap veg I needed in my regular supermarkets (Aldi and Sainsburys) last year and because there were no limits didn’t venture to Lidl.

I wonder @2childmum2 whether the limits will/are being relaxed to ensure they clear fresh vegetables by Wednesday. 🤔
  • I think it's 3 identical items per customer a Lidl. They're the only supermarket to offer shallots at 5p - and these are labelled as "Deluxe" ones to boot !
ALDI are the only supermarket to offer red & white cabbages at 5p, but as has been already said, you've got to get there early in the day.
Potatoes at 5p are available at ALDI and Lidl only.
As for the other veggies (carrots, parsnips, swedes) you've also got Morrisons in the mix (5p with a MORE card) as well as ALDI & Lidl.
Next expensive at 15p are Sainsbury's & TESCO with a Nectar & Clubcard respectively.
Most expensive of the main supermarkets is ASDA (30p each or 5 for £1)
Bah Humbug award goes to the following, who aren't joining in with the competition...
    Co-Op
    Iceland
    M & S
    Waitrose.

ASDA not going to sell many then!

Perhaps in Aldi they will say  "thats shallot"

    Im here all week!

  • Yes Lidl does enforce the 3 per customer limit at the till - so bought 3 bags of shallots yesterday and 3 today. The good thing about shallots is that they are a handy size and will last for a while. I'll keep a bag for myself and my mum (a regular cook) is welcome to the rest. Lidl had all of the other veg in stock but realistically it would have been a bit of a pain lugging 3kg+ home on foot. My local M&S was rammed with trolleys so I decided not to venture in, shopping should not be a stressful event.

It looks like tomorrow is going to be an early trip to Aldi for veg (and cheese, and ice-cream) then!

I'm off to Aldi too @Rosa_Damascena. I just need cream and some salad stuff. It shouldn't be a problem but if I have to go to Waitrose I will. I'm sure Martin would forgive me just for once. 🤣
