I didn't know that. Do you know what the reason is? That would count me out anyway then.

That has caused the NBTS a huge donation headache and it excludes so many wannabes. Not 100% sure but I believe that blood wasn't screened for CJD and therefore they can ill afford the risk. I was just looking to see the case where a person died in the UK with CJD believed to be contracted through a transfusion. No problems with transfusions these days though..... It's all tidied up ;)

I think you meant if you've received a blood since 1980, rather than just a standard operation, see point 9 here. That mentions it, it also has a list of reasons why you might not be able to donate. Really easy thing to get muddled up but thought I ought to clear it up :-)

    I hope that helps :-)

I think nytehawk got a bit mixed up there. You can't give blood if you've had a transfusion (not operation) since 1980.
It would count me out as I've had more than one op since between 1980-2007.

I go along with that - making an appointment is the best way - on one session last year I forgot and had to wait about an hour. I pig out on the biccys & crisps after - I'm particularly partial to those 3 packs of Cheese Sandwich Tuc style ones

Oooh I've only ever seen sweet biccies (suits me) but there's a good choice. Sometimes posh Bronte ones.

  • I work for large government agency and the welsh blood people come 3 times a year so I don't even have to think about having to find somewhere to donate. Plus I get time off work for donating :D and a choccie biscuit at the end!

I think it's something that everyone should do if they can. I was encouraged to do it by my school when I was 18 and have continued donating 3 times a year since (I'm now 25).

Well done for raising the issue!

I've just had a look on the website regarding who can give blood.
I am willing to give, but well to be honest I do smoke the odd joint and occasionally dabble with other substances(very rarely these days 2-4 times a year-so obviously wouldn't donate near these events).Never injected anything or been an addict, I just enjoy bending my mind every so often.(Sorry to those who object-well actually I'm not,it's my life my body, and I'm glad for the experiences I've had.)
This doesn't seem to be to be covered in the questions on the site, does anyone know if I'd be rejected?
They seem pretty rigid with some of the questions,(sorry cant quote precisely, but to this effect) e.g "have you had sex in the past 12 months with a male who has had oral or anal sex with another male."
Well as it happens ,no I haven't,but have all gay men suddenly got aids-or am I missing something?

It's definitely receiving blod that precludes you and not an operation. I donate and had a Caesarean in 1996 and that doesn't stop me.

In fact I have got out of the habit over the past year as I couldn't donate one time due to low red blood count and haven't got back into it until just now, when I went online and booked an appointment for next week.

I posted really early on in the Rick thread about the importance of giving blood and am so delighted that this is turning into something so positive - people power at its best! Just imagine if only say 25% of the MSE'rs registered how much the stocks would swell:T

Hope you don't mind me adding The Scotblood Website for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service. I've regularly read your thread on your nephew, I do hope he is better soon & thank's for bringing this issue up it is so important.

as a fellow Scot now living in England, it completely slipped my mind with everything going on. i have edited the original post to include Scotland's website

I gave blood for the first time yesterday. :o

It was a painless experience (both literally and metaphorically). It was my New years resolution as I had been putting it off cos Im too busy/too awkward to get to etc etc.

My son was in a serious accident 4 years ago aged 9 and had to receive blood so i understand how important it is for supplies to be maintained. Also my blood type is 0neg which means its even more valuable as its able to be given to most people. This all made me feel ashamed that I have never given before just due to laziness so I decided that this year I was going to start.

I would suggest to those who are considering it to do it, it really is simple and it took less than an hour from beginning to end (I didn't have an appointment), it didn't hurt and was not an unpleasant process.

Just to say that your nephew is in my thoughts fsdss and my heart goes out to you and your family. My son was also in intensive care and we were told to expect the worstbut our boy made a full recovery - kids are strong and they fight back.

    thinking of you
