We do have thick stone walls... but the meter's on the outside.Grey_Critic said:***The latest is that I'm not on the waiting list, because they don't think we have enough mobile signal to support one. ***My mate Jim had a similar problem - His walls were 3ft thick and it took a lot of visits by engineers to replace the meter before they decided that the signal could not get through - and a tidy sum in compensation0 -

Of course people could lie, but all EV cars will be MOT'd at some point and the mileage would then be verified. No different to your leccy bill being estimated until they get an actual meter reading. And they can add a box to the Logbook saying mileage when sold, or even just do that via new keeper VED. I know it's the government, but I can't see it being a difficult job. That is exactly how it will work, you estimate when you pay your VED and the actual meter reading will be at the MOT.(Unless "they" intend for you to have your mileage officially taken at VED renewal, make you pay for the "service" and then sting you for VAT on the "service"

But his were on the inside as are many of the houses built around 1800.Mildly_Miffed said:

Exactly my thoughts. Rachel Reeves showed yesterday she didn't have a clue about anything car tax or MOT related, but she doesn't need to. Government set policy, civil servants deliver.Bigphil1474 said:Couldn't they just ask you your current mileage reading, and expected mileage to be driven, when you pay for the VED, and compare that to when you renew your VED to give you a refund or extra cost. Add a requirement to supply the vehicle mileage when paying for annual VED. Others need to work on eliminating clocking using a cheap plug in box.1 -
Typhoon2000 said:What if you do your miles on the continent or track/off road. How will MOT mileage checks cope with that. Also it is not a legal requirement to have a functioning odometer and non functioning odometer is not an MOT fail.
There's no reason you couldn't record your mileage leaving the country and again when returning, and haven't that mileage charge rebated.
For off-road use, you'd be paying duty on the fuel anyway.
Though you do raise a point; will this charge apply if a vehicle was SORN or unregistered? Say you had a small van to run around a construction site or a quarry or something.1 -
MOT mileage isn't always correct and currently no way to correct it if not immediately spotted if you don't have correct evidence.Niv said:Its daft making people declare it as many will just lie. Milage is already recorded when you get an MOT so why not get the MOT centre to report it electronically the same why they must declare an MOT pass...
Could also double up as a perk of getting a new car as there is no MOT so no milage declaration (I am sure people wouldn't like that though).
How will it work if you sell a car part way through the year or prior to MOT, who gets the mileage allocated?Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Not always entered correctly. I think they'll need photo to prove mileage and prevent typosfacade said:Herzlos said:<snip>I imagine for most people it'll just be done as part of the MOT and the maximum fee will go up by a few quid.
<snip>Obviously, the MOT will simply have to go up, but the MOT already takes the mileage and enters it, so they don't have to do a single thing extra at MOT to justify an increase, except not make any mistakes, which is easy enough for the owner to check on that little print out that you get.Now charging a tenner to enter the mileage outside of an MOT would be reasonable, at 12 months & 24 months.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
An estimate when you pay for your VED, or a verified charge when you get the MOT. The other eVED collection vehicle that could be chosen would be via insurers as you are already estimating your mileage when obtaining insurance.Bigphil1474 said:Couldn't they just ask you your current mileage reading, and expected mileage to be driven, when you pay for the VED, and compare that to when you renew your VED to give you a refund or extra cost. Interestingly, the eVED has been linked to funding the roads directly:Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said:
“All cars contribute to wear and tear on our roads, so it is only right that our motoring taxes cover EVs via a modest per mile levy, with extra support to keep EV ownership attractive.”

I thought I heard that on an interview on BBC, so glad I managed to find the quote to back it up.
