1. Perhaps the OP is at home when the window cleaner does the work..Exodi .
2. There may be someone else who is mostly at home..
3, The window cleaner could always arrange to collect the money at a time the OP is at home.

I always carry at lest £40 with me. Have been to often in shops, where their card readers where faulty and the only way to pay for the shopping was by cash.1 -
I did say unless you're someone that won't be out so I'm not sure why you'd correct me with the same point?Eyeful said:

Arranging for the window cleaner to make a second visit to collect the cash so you don't have to deal with the horror of using a card reader?
It was obvious you're a strident cash user, you didn't need to confirm this.Eyeful said:I always carry at lest £40 with me. Have been to often in shops, where their card readers where faulty and the only way to pay for the shopping was by cash.
It's interesting that the card readers always seem to be faulty and the 'cash is king' brigade always get the last laugh in their tales.
I can't remember the last time all a shops card readers were faulty and the only way to pay was cash., except the time I was at an airport about 3 years ago while on business where all the payment terminals went down (I think it was a larger networking issue at the airport) but they had ATM's in the terminal that worked so I just withdrew cash then.
The only things I seem to need cash for nowadays are buying stuff off facebook marketplace (but even there people are increasingly preferring bank transfers). I virtually never need it for parking (they all have apps nowadays, though I'm sure you'll tell me all the ones in your area only take cash).Know what you don't1 -
Some of the statements made here are not consistent with what Nationwide says:I have only used the card reader a few times, and did not have any trouble.1
-
The 3 points still involve much more physical inconvenience than a few minutes on a card reader, or previously setting up the requisite biometrics and the few seconds on an app. Even if I or someone was at home, it would require I had withdrawn cash (or taken from emergency cash which I then have to remember to replace). Returning to a location with the transport and time involved for £15?Eyeful said:

I don't - on the one time in several years a shop had card machines not working, they had signs up so I simply shopped elsewhere. Even if they didn't, it seems odd to plan for a 1-in-years occurrence daily, I'd rather take the inconvenience once in a while. More places tend to be cashless than cash only.1 -
You're overlooking people who don't or can't use a smartphone for whatever reason. Just because a technology exists, doesn't mean everyone should be compelled to adopt it.Exodi said:

Nationwide were bombarding me nearly two years ago with notices that you could replace the card reader with biometrics if you did a short one off verification process. Did it in 2 minutes and never used the card reader since.
Of course there are some that might flat out refuse to provide a selfie or whatever is required of the verification process. Just like people who refuse to provide ID to their banks or get a Tesco Clubcard. Either these people are kingpins, or overestimate their own importance.
While the OP managed to make a complete pigs ear of it, when I did use the card reader a couple of years ago, it only took a minute or two and certainly didn't ruin my day.
I'd rather a company had strict security processes (especially for setting up a new payee) than not.
90% of the time, my window cleaner does my windows while I'm at work. The evidence is a payment request slip through the door, catching him on the cameras (oh and clean windows!).Eyeful said:
As it was such a low amount, why did you not just pay cash?.andygb said:I tried to use my Nationwide card reader to pay my window cleaner £15.00.
Unless you're someone that seldom leaves the house or you plan on leaving a secret envelope of cash outside, it's not realistic to expect you can pay them in cash.
You obviously are adept with modern systems, however, not everyone will be as conditioned to the modern world as yourself.
Also, I didn't realise one was generally expected to possess a Tesco clubcard in today's society.2 -

Don't think so, if you can't or won't use a smartphone then there's the card reader.
Don't want to use that then don't use home banking via the internet, use Nationwide's Telephone Banking service.
Or write a cheque.
Or do all your banking by visiting a branch or a Post Office for cash withdrawals.

Only if you want to shop at Tesco, pay lower prices and give them all your shopping data.1 -
Exodi:
1. Point 1, was included just for completeness of my answer. I am sorry if you took it personally or if it upset you.
2. You are wrong I am not strident cash user. Most of the time I pay using a credit card.
3. Our experiences of coming across faulty card readers is clearly very different.
I have come across faulty card readers in shops and on buses. The latest one was last week.
4. Have no car to park. So can not answer your last point..
Expect councils wanting to cut costs and security reasons, they are most likely to be apps.
I know we cannot pay overdue book finds at our library with cash, only via apps.

1. I on the other hand find it takes very little physical inconvenience to just extract the £15 from my wallet and hand it over to the person.
2. I also find it simple and easy to replace the money in my wallet when I need to.
As part of the BBC scam week.
The "You & Yours" team has made a program explaining how scammers are using card readers in front of you on your own doorstep to steal money from you. Well worth a listen I think.

I don't get asked by the app to use the card reader for transfers out to existing payees I've paid before
Only first time payees only
I would prefer to ditch the reader but I don't like the idea of uploading photos of myself to a bank

When I set up the selfie option it failed to recognise me the next time it asked me to use it! Tried several times but it then suggested using the card reader instead! Which I did! The other snag with Face ID I have found is you need to remove your glasses. Which makes as blind as a bat so can’t read any of the onscreen instructions anyway which probably explains why it failed! Much prefer finger biometrics…1

Nationwide offer...in fact heavily promote their app...however i prefer the card reader as it means someone needs my physical card and my pin and not just my phone to authorise a new payee.Rob5342 said:Nationwide are hopelessly old fashioned, progress is something they take very little interest in. True on modern cards you can't see the last four digits when it's inserted (the card number is on the back pointing the other way) but you know it's going to ask you so look before you insert. Worst case scenario leave that bit until last and fill everything else in then take the card out.0
