Have you thought it's simply they don't think you'll be profitable customers - retired, no mortgage, decent savings and you repay your credit card in full.

Back in the day when I applied for a Santander account I was also rejected and had no idea why. It was just a silly current account and they were paying a good interest rate on balances of up to £20k.
I had no idea what I was doing and the rejection letter said I can complain to the ombudsman if I wanted so I did and suddenly they opened the account for me.
  • Update. Have had an email back saying our application has all gone thru and I now need to upload certain docs into their doc upload hub. Except of course that didnt work. The combination of their ref number, our surname and DOB didnt match.  SO ANOTHER 30 mins waiting for "customer service"  etc...we went thru every permutation of spelling DOB's etc then gave up and I was given an email to send them off. 1 doc from list A   passport etc, 1 doc from list B  something with name and address....off that went, 2 days later...another email asking to send certain docs .....AGAIN. So off they went and a follow up phone call....again...and ask !!!!!!. OH thats an auto email asking for docs...I said, what AGAIN!  Why wasnt that disabled  AFTER our conversation... ahhhh, ohhhhh, ermmmm.  Dunno.  Santander...professional bank they say!

It does beg the question of why you're so keen for them to get your business....

    Better than my Natwest account.
Even if the account has better advertised features than the NatWest one you're comparing it with, it still seems like a pretty poor customer experience, which is what I was referring to.

Joint account as is our only other bank account, (Halifax clarity) for travelling paid off in full when used. The £50k is in our current account as we are building a shed, £25k ish and I want to buy a Jag F type to put in it.
We do have a lot more £££ elsewhere in savings. We get 3 pensions pm......Mystified

Still doesn't really answer the question.
Ive Just spent a similar amount on a kitchen extension, but kept money in savings account paying 4% & just transfer to current account as & when builder needed paying.

Remember this is MSE & keeping large sums in current accounts paying nothing is a waste. Fair enough if it was pre Internet banking days when it was a bit more of a faff on, but its not just a few clicks & done.
