Spending It

Yes cinema and theatre and great ways to spend money. I have season tickets to a local theatre and independent cinema and I usually give something to their charitable foundations too. I also like riding bikes and spend a fair amount on wheel sets and maintaining them. For me a car gets me from A to B so I'll drive my Civic until it's past 200k miles and then by another one.bjorn_toby_wilde said:
Gigs festivals and theatre - a wonderful thing to spend on. I’d add trips to museums and exhibitions and city breaks too.MallyGirl said:
You could develop an interest in gigs/festivals or theatre - that seems to be burning a few pennies for us. Then there is the whole world of the cycle - a friend with far too much money (for a very sad reason) has just added a titanium Brompton to his collection 😳Sea_Shell said:Spending big is harder if you're not interested in travelling, or premium brand cars.
I can spend a lot on bikes as well. A titanium Brompton though? That I can’t fathom 🤷And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.0 -
Our local “Little Theatre”, mostly (very good) amateur productions, is a veritable sea of grey hair - the are Our People 🤣Bostonerimus1 said:

Festivals & gigs are easy to get spendy on…..we still enjoy camping (& you can spend on luxury tents, sleeping beds/bags, even glamping pods etc), but certainly the camping fields at Latitude have shrunk, as more & more take camper vans: we have one pal who rents one just for that weekend 😎
TV subscription channels can rack up the monthlies if you let them. We deliberately let most lapse, then join for a couple of months and binge stuff, esp in the winter months 💪
Or just crank the heating up a notch or two & eat out at nicer places. Mind you, we found a Yemeni restaurant in Leicester before a gig last night - really nice food, a delicious figgy Saudi Shake (they missed the opportunity to call it a Saudi Sheikh 🫣), under £60 for four of us - we will never spend it all dining that cheaply 🤣
Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!0 -
I spend on music classes. Most of my fellow students learning a new instrument are retired. The group classes cost a fortune and there's always a better instrument, mouthpiece, reeds etc to buy. I don't travel and Wetherspoons does me for a pub lunch but I still manage to spend.1

Just you wait until the shake tax is added.cfw1994 said:

We found a great Lebanese mezze place near the Bristol Beacon last week - if we hadn't been heading in to a gig then it would have led to a great doggy bag. Very reasonably priced too.cfw1994 said:

We do take the camper to festivals as my hips aren't what they used to be - Bearded Theory and Beautiful Days booked for 2026.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Photography as a hobby can drain ££££s in no time. Ask me how I know!3

These days it seems that sports and hobbies can cost whatever you want. I was looking at electric bikes the other day, some retailing at nine grand and I suspect that's probably "mid range" for these machines. Meanwhile I play golf with guys who buy putters at £500 (and then they'll buy another when the first one "doesn't work".) Obviously it is easy to spend money in the sense that there's plenty of expensive stuff out there, but what I'm interested in is why I will never spend £500 on a putter when I could easily afford to - and suspect I'd rather like to - but just can't let myself do it.2

Expensive tickets.
We pay for VIP tickets for any event that we fancy. Worth every penny. This year's list included: Northern Belle (luxury train), off-shore sailing (Clacton Air Show) and Duxford Air Show. Next year will include Leeds Castle classical concert. We have lifetime membership for our local classical cinema. We pay for comfort and best seats.1 -
I go fishing. Many people spend a lot of money on the hobby/obsession.jim8888 said:These days it seems that sports and hobbies can cost whatever you want. Either as a 'tackle tart' buying all the latest gear, or spending thousands on being members of Big Fish syndicates.
I could could afford to do this but have no desire to.
I am a member of a club that costs £40 a year and maybe spend £100 a year on tackle and £100 on bait.0 -

That is because of something going on between your ears. Have you decided it doesn't make financial sense for you, or is it more of a stance you've taken towards such an extravagance? Perhaps you're just not the sort of person who would do that. Where does that feeling come from. And so on.A little FIRE lights the cigar0
