  • Did you get any resolution in the end? I've been going round and round in circles and am on the verge of closing my account.

Does it still do the same if you go to https://www.hsbc.co.uk/auth/ ?

I’m having the same issue. I can no longer log on to online banking. The QR code doesn’t scan and I have no other options. I contacted HSBC and I had to go through various processes to try to get it to work, but still no luck. In the end they told me to go to my local branch with my laptop and they would try to help me. My local branch has been closed and the next nearest is in a town that I don’t go to very often. I will call in next time I am in town, but I can’t imagine they will be able to help me if HSBC IT department can’t.

As this thread is one of the first hits you get when searching for HSBC QR code login problems I thought I'd post up the solution. Unfortunately this will probably involve visiting a branch.

HSBC are now able to roll back the QR code update for individual customers having issues logging on to their accounts on desktops, laptops etc. Once reported the change should take no more than 24 hours and the login method will revert to the previous app generated six digit security code.

Not ideal that a visit to a branch is required but in my dealings with HSBC over the phone I didn't get one CS agent that was even aware of the QR code authentication system being rolled out. Maybe that will change now they acknowledge there is an issue.

Looks like this change has coincided with me trying to activate a new physical secure key (but don't get a prompt when I try to log in)- as per another thread I have just posted! Perhaps my issue is due to related system changes?

Just read your thread. What a palaver!

I can't imagine your issues are related though. The QR code is an updated log in method for those that previously generated a six digit code on the HSBC app. Which you say you don't use. Or want to.

Have to say that the QR code update seems totally unnecessary and the branch staff appeared to agree. Updates for the sake of updates.

    Update.

Still not working. Log in reverts back to the QR code method.

But it appears the end is in sight. I actually got a call from one of the branch team I'd spoken to previously and she informed me that the issue will be addressed in the next app update.

My main issue with the QR code is that I do all my banking on my phone. So if I want to pay my credit card bill I have to scan the QR code on the credit card app via the HSBC app…. except I obviously can't take a picture of my phone WITH my phone.

I've tried explaining this to staff via chat and got "helpful" suggestions such as use my laptop(!) to take a picture of the QR code (didn't work) or upload a screenshot (no upload feature). That person said they would remove the QR code thing from my account within 24 hours but it didn't work.

I've been transferring money to another account and using that for now, but HSBC is my main account so this is really annoying.

Surely anyone who does banking on their phone is having the same problem? I don't understand why each individual customer has to request to have it removed.

I’m in the same boat using a single mobile device to pay a credit card using the open banking/direct payment method. I’ve tried using a second device but the process falls over as it doesn’t return to the credit card app properly and so the payment fails.

I don’t understand how they think it’s more secure to ask customers to login to a website with easily obtainable information to generate a QR code. Especially when the webpage and app are on the same device with the same IP/MAC address with access controlled using biometric data.
