I tried the Broadband section but nobody there seems to be on benefits.

What I am after is for someone who had bought the BT Social Tariff 35mb £16 a month broadband to carry out the tests on the links below and copy paste back the results to this thread.

I am particularly interested in the Latency figure reported.

Generic Speed Test   https://fast.com/

Samknows basic speed test   https://speedtest.samknows.com/

Samknows Real speed  https://www.samknows.com/realspeed/

If some people on BT 35mb could kindly post their results for the above 3 tests it would help me see if I am going to get the improvement I seek in latency, a test on wifi would be adequate as I am seeking real world results.

Please only post your results if you are on BT 35mb service and choose a quiet time with no video streaming or big downloading going on.

I'm on this tariff.... let me get some data

    1. Fast: download 37Mbps, Latency unloaded 11ms loaded 109ms, upload speed 7.8Mbps
    2. Speedtest: Latency 12.4ms, jitter 0.31ms, download 37.4Mbps, Upload 11.1Mbps
    3. Cisco (samknows): download 36.9mbps, upload 10.4 mbps, latency 18.8ms, jitter 8.26ms

Tested on PC wired (not wifi) connection to router. South Cornwall.

You need to remember that location & time of day can make a big difference to results people get.

Thanks a lot for that, is it me or does that seem quite high for latency?

I am getting these from wifi on a wireless bridge

I am surprised by your figures (B), I was hoping for single digit latency, you have slightly better JITTER which I would expect on an Ethernet cable connection. My upload is better

    A1. Fast: download 35Mbps, upload speed 17.8Mbps,  Latency unloaded 15ms,  loaded 71ms,
    B1. Fast: download 37Mbps, upload speed 7.8Mbps,    Latency unloaded 11ms,  loaded 109ms,

    A2. Speedtest: download 32.5Mbps, Upload 19.6Mbps, Latency 17.4ms, jitter 0.92ms,
    B2. Speedtest: download 37.4Mbps, Upload 11.1Mbps, Latency 12.4ms, jitter 0.31ms,

    A3. Cisco (SK): download 31.3mbps, upload 18.7 mbps, latency 37.5ms, jitter 19ms
    B3. Cisco (SK): download 36.9mbps, upload 10.4 mbps, latency 18.8ms, jitter 8.26ms

Obviously we are in different areas, different cabling to green box, different exchanges and tests done at different times of day but still at these rates I would probably stay as I am.

I wonder if your connection is truncated to the level of the price you are paying, someone mentioned that is done rather than throttling.  I am in a town centre but before fibre came along it was very much over subscribed.

Not being a gamer online these days it's not something I'm particular affected by/conscious of. Suggestion out there is what... AI Google "A latency (or ping) of under 50ms is excellent for most activities, with the ideal being 20ms to 50ms for gaming and video calls. Anything under 100ms is generally acceptable for general use, while above 200ms will be frustrating and is considered poor. "

Based on that we're both getting good service but I'm not sure what is standard across UK or for this package. I'm in a town centre modern apartment across the road from a junction box and wired to router so would expect good figures.

  • Well you're getting better wifi than I am to our 300Mpbs fibre (to the house) connection!  Think we might need a new router  O.o

probably the wireless bridge causing the latency,

Thanks for your feedback, when I visit family locally I find some who have 150mb fibre but still rubbish response, very delayed ring door bell notifications etc.  I have friends abroad and family who have reported 3ms response, even in countries we would consider "developing" countries.

It seems to me that the whole broadband market is no longer service driven, one hears horror stories about installation, with the stock reply being we will send you a naff box so you have some very basic internet but are still paying for fibre.

I wonder if they are delivering a high end capable infrastructure which is being limited to what we actually pay for,

There was a time when latency only mattered to Gamers but now with many services dependent on the Cloud it seems to be far more critical.

Currently I pay for ad-hoc access plus mobile access, the latter is rubbish so for emergencies only.  I have connected wireless bridge to neighbours in the past, they had ADSL and the latency was better than you are getting.

That being said, I think the nature of both of our connections will be affected by cache, so the first set of tests will be the worst, but if you keep doing tests you will get more consistent results.

Could I ask what you ultimately want the figures for?

    Thanks for your reply.

My primary reason is to decide if it is worth me getting it, "I am particularly interested in the Latency figure reported".

I am also interested to see if the social tariff is any way inferior, whilst people say it is not, the latency figures quoted by the one person who has run the test show pretty bad latency figures.

This suggests to me that it is in fact inferior, especially as that person did the test on an Ethernet connection which I would be much better than wifi.

The figures I quote for my own tests are from a wireless bridge which is far slower than wifi never mind Ethernet connected..

Are you on 35mb social tariff?
