My plan is similar, spend everything between now age 57 and age 85.  Ending up at 85 with SP and DB pension of £8k. It's going to be hard to increase my spending to the necessary levels though. I'll probably make a thread somewhere, maybe Pension success thread, because my set-up is a bit extreme.

+1 disagree on the new cars strategy.  Unless you are getting a lot of pleasure from it.

New car every 5 years for us.  We get a lot of pleasure out of being able to buy the exact model we want, in the colour and trim of our choosing.  Plus the knowledge that no-one has smoked in there, and that no kids/dogs have thrown up or peed.
  • The OH has decided she wan't a new £80k camper van. Based the fact that we now have a dog (no overseas air travel at least) and it will open up the potential of unlimited UK breaks it might not be a bad idea. Maybe 50% residual after 5 years....and helps towards 'die with zero'. She is appalled with the prospect of owning anything like that which has been used by someone before but does have several OCD traits.

You can get the ferry to Ireland, Continental Europe as well.
I think the restrictions on taking dogs are not so onerous as in the past.
They are tricky to park in a town though.

You have to visit the vet going out and another coming back, time away permitting.
I'll work on talking her out of it.  :D
I like the idea of it but struggling to get my head past parting with over £100k on a camper van and new car. On the other hand, YOLO.

My parents used to take their dog away with them in their campervan to Europe two or three times a year, for six weeks at a time. There are vets that are familiar with the process close by most of the ferry ports, and online forums where you can discuss them. (Vets, I mean, though I expect there are forums where you can discuss ferry ports if you want to. And dogs too!)
The dog passed away last year so now they go away without that complication.

Have you hired a camper first so you know what you want? We tried taking the dogs away in ours a few times but it wasn't restful. They were too big really, didn't like being confined and wouldn't settle when they could hear critters around and under the van. The last trip was taking just one dog back in May and the space was better but something went wrong with his leg which hasn't resolved so now we won't take the van away again until we are dogless.

No and I will definitely push to hire one before committing to such a large purchase. I fear the dream isn't aligned to the reality!

We already owned the van so just got it converted when we didn't need it anymore for the original purpose. As it is a SWB VW T5 it is quite snug and has no option for a shower (or a loo with any degree of privacy). On the other hand it fits into a standard parking space and under most car park barriers. You definitely need to try before spending big bucks to work out what matters.
