Women who argue they were not fairly notified about a rise in the State Pension age may still have a chance of being paid compensation, as the Government has announced a review of its earlier decision to refuse financial redress. But pensions secretary Pat McFadden has stressed that this DOESN'T mean payouts are definitely coming. Here's the latest...

Presumably this thread won't take long to descend into all the usual polarised opinions and will go the same way as all the others - is it perhaps worth locking it, just to leave a signpost to the article, rather than having to moderate all the noise?8

Not really polarised opinions. There seems to be a concensus on here on the subject.0

I think 'consensus' would be stretching a point - there are undoubtedly plenty of well-informed posters who are unsympathetic (and hence references to 'WASPE' and so on) but conversely no shortage of those aligned with the campaign.westv said:Not really polarised opinions. I totally agree, MSE with complete regularity closes every discussion on the topic, including from memory their last three, so I suspect that will end up being four fairly soon.eskbanker said:Presumably this thread won't take long to descend into all the usual polarised opinions and will go the same way as all the others - is it perhaps worth locking it, just to leave a signpost to the article, rather than having to moderate all the noise?1 -
There was a large number of single post sign ups every time this crops up, it is almost as if there is a group of people online trying to push a narrative.eskbanker said:

Turning it on its head, I wasn't directly told about the rise in my own state pension age, but I knew about both mine and theirs, and I found out about theirs in my teens when I couldn't have given a hoot about pensions. I've never heard a good argument for why the WASPI women were so uniquely ignorant. I know we all tend to assume they're arguing in bad faith, but I'd be open to an honest admission of complete obliviousness.6

Especially, this is very much a political debate! I know exactly where my opinion of this lie on this matter.0

Do we, or is that just a gratuitous generalisation?Universidad said:I know we all tend to assume they're arguing in bad faith...0 -
Yes and everyone knows that you should always pay your bills on time and not get into debt. And yet people do. It's not that they are ignorant as such it's just that they have never been taught to budget or don't take enough interest in money matters that they suddenly find themselves in a difficult situation.Universidad said:Turning it on its head, I wasn't directly told about the rise in my own state pension age, but I knew about both mine and theirs, and I found out about theirs in my teens when I couldn't have given a hoot about pensions. Personally I think it's a two sided situation where on one side there's a group of women weren't financially astute, maybe believed that their husbands would provide as well as never divorce them or mess up with their own money. And on the other there's the government assuming that everyone likes to read the financial section of an intelligent newspaper and placed their faith that women would learn what was happening and make sure they weren't adversely effected.
I've heard that supposedly the government wrote to everyone about the situation years and years in advance and yet many women never received anything. Not sure what else you would like after hearing that the standard argument was that they didn't know. I think that's an honest enough admission.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Considering that (checks date) yesterday's thread on this very topic lasted less than five hours, I can only marvel at the optimism shown by opening another one.
