Fridge is not cold - freezer is fine.

A couple of days ago I noticed my fridge wasn't cold - I adjusted the temperature dial but nothing has changed. It's definitely not cold at all.

I also noticed some ice lollies on top shelf of freezer had gone soft though when I moved them to a different shelf they firmed up again. Today they have returned to soggy! Ice cubes are still frozen though, as are other items.

Can anyone shed any light on what's happening here?? I'm so confused.

The door hasn't been left open, the seal appears intact. The light is coming on when door opened and there's still that buzzing sound that comes from the appliance that indicates it's working

It's a Beko CFG1552W or CFG1552S or CFG1552B (manual lists all of them!)

Thank you!

We had this exact scenario three weeks ago (but Whirlpool from IKEA not Beko). Engineer said refrigerant gas has leaked out, not repairable. Probably not what you want to hear, sorry.

Freezers should be at -16 so if ice is nearly melting then it's faulty, not at all fine.

As both compartments are having issues it sounds as if your gas has leaked or the compressor is knackered even though it runs.

Another possibility on some models is that the evaporator pipes and fins at the back are clogged with dust although not all modern models have these.

Ice cubes are still frozen, as are other items. I tested it by putting bottles half full of water in the freezer and they both froze. So it's still working, it's really just the fridge. Not sure why the lollies melted that time.

Sorry, no good at quoting and whatnot! Think I messed that up.

Misslayed - it's ok, these things do break down every few years (they shouldn't!)

Is the fridge constantly making a louder than usual noise? We had the same just this month with our 7 year old LG american fridge.

First thing to try is to turn it of for about 5 minutes and then back on.

If it is a frost free model (that blows air out of vents into the freezer rather than having the visible radiator on the back wall of the freezer), sometimes the cooling coils behind the rear wall of the freezer freeze up, If so, turning it off for 24 hours can sometimes solve the problem.

Also, as above, the rear cooling fins are full of dust, but you have to pull the fridge out to check.
Ours was too (an cleaning / usting this made a small improvement, but it wasn't the fundamental cause of the fault.

However, if these don't work (as in our case) it is likely a refrigerant leak or faulty compressor.

In our case most of the gas was lost, but there was enough left to just keep the fridge at +8 and the freezer at +4 so we were using the freezer section as the fridge for the last week or so, but the fridge was running the compressor at full speed 24/7 to try and get the temperature down to its target temperature.

The repairman says once these start to lose gas they are a lost cause as they aren't designed to be topped up like commercial fridges, and if they do try to refill them there is something like a 90% chance they will be faulty again within a few days.

  • In the old days fridge - freezers had two compressors ,one for each section ,most modern units have one compressor and its for the freezer BUT they blow cold air into the fridge to keep the temp down ,you could check that none of the vents in the back of the fridge unit are blocked but as others have said if the freezer temp is rising sound like the whole lot is faulty.

Is the fridge in your house (kitchen etc) or is it on a garage/shed? If indoors, is the room kept warm?

Have looked at the back of the fridge but have no idea what I'm looking at! What does a vent look like?? and a cooling fins?? Sorry for the stupid questions.

There's certainly a fair amount of dust, which I'm trying to deal with. This has come at just the wrong time as just recovering from pneumonia and have very little energy!

It is in the kitchen. The kitchen is a reasonably warm room (compared to other rooms) as it is on the small side and obviously, there's heat from cooking now and again.

It's not making more of a noise than usual.
