Anyone can tell a bank that a person no longer lives at an address - write "Gone Away" on the envelope and put it in the post box. The return address on most bank envelopes directs the item back to a returned post handling centre where they'll do what ever they think needs to be done.

Hell some idiot who accidentally received my monthly mortgage statement (thanks postie) did that to me instead of simply chucking the envelope back in the post box to give Royal Mail a second chance. As soon as the bank received the envelope back my online access was revoked and I had to go to my local branch with proof of (unchanged) address. The person behind the desk had a whale of a time trying to "change" my address to clear the gone away flag, but that's another story.

As to post from previous person return not know at this address. After so many they should be marked as gone away.

The family of the deceased should have informed the bank of their status. A unknown 3rd party can not do this, as it required the death cert.

I know!!!! Over 21 years I have returned DOZENS of them - marked variously not known, not at this address, return to sender, deceased etc etc When I complained in a local hub branch I was told only the addressee can amend the address!! They offered to write to her - at the address they have on record . . . . which is MINE!! When I tried to phone they would not put me through to anyone because it was not my account. Talk about banging head on brick wall. Anyway main branch have promised to end this and also now have my assurance that if they do not stop this I shall go into the banking hall with a placard and sit on the floor until they do sort it. That threat seemed to get taken seriously.

Just received their communication. In my view, the requirement to update details for recurring payments/CPAs would be better off nearer the top.

Cross out the address then write 'Addressee Deceased - Return to Sender' and pop in a mailbox. They'll stop sending them after a few of these.

Someone did this to me (at my home address) and my debit card stopped working. I had to come back from the afterlife and go to my local branch (with my driving licence) to re-activate my accounts with that bank.

Do you really imagine I have not done that dozens of times!! Variations on that message have been applied for 21 years - as I already said.

Got the new card a few days ago and noticed it has the expiry date of the previous one. So another card will have to be issued a year from now. What a waste!

I am surprised to see this - when I lost my wallet last year and had to get new cards, all of them were issued with a date a few more years beyond the expiry date of the lost cards.

Didn't know they changed or even noticed. Had my new clarity card as previous expires this month (new expiry date) and just looked and has Visa, as long as it the works the same, makes no difference to me.

  • I am still waiting for my new card ,they sent me a message on their App to say i will be getting a new one.

It's useful to know if you have lots of Visa and had a MasterCard as a backup

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
