Money Moral Dilemma: Should my friends share the cost of my holiday speeding fine?

Totally agree with this comment. Looking at it another way: in the UK points can be put on a licence for motoring offences such as speeding. You cannot divvy up those points amongst all those in the car. So let your friends decide whether or not they think you were harshly treated - if they are real friends and feel you were hard done by they will happily offer a contribution. If they think you were not driving carefully enough they are under no obligation, but they may think twice about more serious implications.Sally1964 said:It would be very generous IF your holiday friends made a token gesture to the cost of the speeding fine. However, to be honest, this was your mistake because you were driving and therefore need to take accountability. I don't wish to sound harsh but don't be surprised if your friends do not help you cover the cost lf the fine. Would you help them to cover a speeding fine?0 -
A friend of mine had to pay a speeding fine from New Zealand that he incurred on a visit there. Apparently the DVLA make money on requests for driver details from other countries?aaRennie said:If it was a spot fine then just pay up. If not just do what most visitors to UK do, go home and forget it, who's going to chase you??0 -
What do you mean by stating “ So we were very careful to obey the limits “ …
Only one person was responsible for that car ( and the safety of ALL passengers ) and, obviously YOU were not careful enough !Pay your fine for driving too fast, after all - it was YOUR fault.0 -
Fair enough it was your fine but if I was in the car as one of your friends I would have offered to chip in. The reality is you were there with three other people no friends were there.1

You should pay it. If one of them were driving for the next trip and incurred a ticket, would you expect to be asked to contribute?
If you expect people who had no control over the speed the car was travelling at to part bear the cost of a speeding ticket, where does it stop? If you crash your car while carrying passengers, do you expect them to pitch in for the cost of your excess/increased insurance premiums?
As a passenger, I would offer to contribute if signage were poor and no one had noticed it. But as you say you slipped over on a hill, this suggests you knew exactly what the limit was and made a mistake that a passenger, were they driving instead, may not have made. People should pay for their own mistakes, not those of other people.

I am surprised that your friends haven't immediately offered to contribute to the fine! So, yes, I feel that they should all chip in - but not sure how you will persuade them to if they didn't offer at the time!1

I personally wouldnt expect a friend to chip in if I did this mistake myself0
