Personally I'd cancel the whole transaction.  Buyer says there will be a code, and on Friday if courier doesn't have the code and as it's the second attempt you agree to give the goods anyways.  Buyer then can claim it was never received as the courier didn't have the code and you shouldn't have given the goods to some stranger contrary to what was agreed.

    But that's me being cynical.

    Thanks @Spoonie_Turtle and @savergrant

My listing was free collection in person.  When the buyer paid, I contacted them asking them to let me know when they could collect and gave them some days I was unavailable.  Next thing I got a text from the courier company with a date for collection, this was the first I had heard of a courier collecting - buyer did not ask me if this was ok.  The text was closely followed by an email from the buyer saying he had arranged collection but for me to rearrange if not suitable - which I had to do.  No I didn’t see any delivery label from the courier.

Will certainly not release the item without the collection code and I’ve made that clear to the buyer and if they don’t have it, will certainly cancel the sale.  What I am worried about is that they may have tried it on the first time thinking I would let the item go without and now that hasn’t worked, may try something else like say the item is not as described or something.  Really wish I could cancel but not sure if it’s too late now 😒

its certainly been a steep learning curve!  Most of the items I’ve sold on eBay I’ve posted or collected in person.

Apologies for the delay in replying.

As others advised you can cancel for the reasons they suggested. If in doubt, go on to live chat and once they've 'sent you around the houses' ask to speak to an agent. That will put your mind at rest

Thank you!  I have spoken to an agent.  Voiced my concerns - she agreed that the buyer should have asked if I was happy with courier collection as it was collection in person on listing, she also agreed that buyer not being able to provide code when I called seemed very dubious.  I asked if I was able to cancel sale at this stage and she confirmed I could.  She talked me through the process to cancel.  Only thing I wasn’t too sure about was that reason was ‘buyer cancelled sale’ or something which I queried but she said it was ok.

Anyway it’s cancelled now!  First thing tomorrow I will ring and cancel courier.

Should I email buyer and tell him I have cancelled - something along the lines of this sale was listed as collection only and you were unable to provide collection code when required, I have concerns about the transaction.  Or should I just leave it?  Just to add, still had no acknowledgement to my previous emails to the buyer which I think is strange.

I'd just leave it now that the sale is cancelled.  I doubt the "buyer" (aka scammer) will cause a fuss as they're been rumbled.

Well surprise, surprise buyer has left negative feedback, saying ‘buyer cancelled sale with no good reason’ !!  Am thinking of whether to do my own feedback or just leave it and put it down to experience 😒

That's rotten!  Is there any way you can add a comment after theirs?

@Brie I don’t think so and also I don’t think you can leave negative feedback for a buyer so will just have to move on.  Annoying though 😡

Contact ebay and reference your previous conversation and they should remove the negative feedback. Also say that the buyer sent a courier for a 'collection in person' listing and despite attempts to contact them didn't give the collection code, so you refused to hand the item over as per eBay policies.

Don't reply. Ask eBay to remove it due to your previous conversations with their agent. If you reply they'll tell you that they can't remove it.

If down the line it doesn't get removed post back and we can advise how to reply to their feedback - I found my sales increased (could be a coincidence)
