This is quite an interesting read about insurance, I don’t even want a van and am reading it!

it suggests that you might be looking at more than £200 though.

You haven’t answered whether you’ve been to the council or not. If that hasn’t got you anywhere, and depending on your circumstances, people may be able to suggest ways to challenge their decision?

Ok mates I found a van for only 700 pounds on my first search on ebay, it has 200,000 miles on the clock and its a small van almost the size of a car.

There are other bigger vans for more money like 1000 odd

How likely is this 700 pound van going to break down in a major way financially?.

Is it foolish to buy a van this cheap? Why? (most are thousands even tens of thousands)

The next biggest cost is the insurance correct? How much is that 200 pounds?
I'd have said a van that cheap may have some serious issues that could render it unroadworthy, or a very expensive fix.

If you need to drive it, e.g. from one overnight parking location to another, maintenance to keep it roadworthy (and pass it's MOT).is going to be needed... But that's going to cost money even if you have the skills to do the work yourself.

A very cheap van may also not last long, and you won't get any money back by selling it.

We're talking something Berlingo, Transit Connect size...?

How likely to cost you money? Very. It's that cheap because it's one bill away from being scrapped.

    C'mon, let's see the ad you've found.

Do you REALLY want to "live" in something that's barely bigger than an estate car? Uninsulated? No windows? No heating?

If it's car sized then there probably isn't enough space to lay down in it.

At £700 it's going to be essentially scrap.

"The next biggest cost is the insurance correct? How much is that 200 pounds?"

We can't answer that for you as it'll depend on your, your driving history and where the van will reside. I'd conservately estimate that if your unemployed, no fixed address and the van will be parked anywhere, you'd be looking at nearer £2000.

You really need to be looking into alternatives and not vans. You will be absolutely miserable trying to live in a van.

I got myself a dummy van quote a month or so ago. Middle aged man, long clean driving history, living in a low risk area. No NCD as I'm still using it on my car. It was about £400 a year.
Road tax will depend on the van but could be be £360 for the year.

Op would have to declare no address & as many have found (u-tube video's) when living in a van full time ins is higher, as there is a greater risk.

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. Being of no fixed abode would likely raise red flags to an insurance company who might rightly suspect it's being used for stealth accommodation- and therefore much more likely to be parked in strange, potentially unsafe places. They would also need to account for it potentially being parked in very high risk areas - increasing the premium, as they can't assume it will always be parked in low risk areas.

I speak of someone who lives in a very high risk area (according to the insurers) for car related thefts and vandalism and that does my premiums no good at all. My premiums are only brought down by having a private drive where I declare it is always parked overnight- never on the road outside.
