I'd stop at 18. It's difficult enough choosing something for that age group and a tenner to them isn't the same as a tenner to us oldies. (anyone over 30!)

  • My Aunties and Uncles stopped buying for me at 18, but I think they all club together for the 21st birthdays. I always thought it should stop younger because in our family there are well over 20 nieces and nephews for everyone to buy for!

My family has stopped at 18, no problems there.

When my OH & I first got together we bought for the nieces & nephews on his side (none on mine) for the fist time at xmas (we were on a very limited budget) - after not receiving an aknowledgement or thank you from anyone of the 4 I refused to buy again ( I was brought up to write thank you letters or draw pics from tiny) & left it to OH (who never bothered of course!!). As the 18th's have come up we have bought them a pressie as each one celebrated & we attended.
    NEVER ASSUME!

Thanks OP for starting this thread.

My nieces (on one side) are 19 and 22 this year. I gave the latter presents up to last year and sent a decent Christmas present for 2007. I suppose this means I will have to continue giving to the younger one till she reaches 21 then stop (wouldn't be fair otherwise).
However, older one is at uni the other doing a gap year, so she probably wouldn't notice if I stopped.:D

Other side is ex's brother's kids, 18 (nephew) and 20 (neice) this year. I'll have to get my nephew something this year and for his 21st as that's what I'm doing for his sister. She is also my goddaughter. After this though, I shall continue to see them (I hope) but shan't feel obliged to buy any more gifts after reading other posts.

I still get presents from my Aunts and Uncles and my parents still give presents to their neieces and nephews who are all in their 30s. In fact my Mum still receives birthday and Christmas money from her Aunt, in fact we receive money from her too.

We don't see our relatives much as we're all spread out across the country, so this is a way we all keep in contact.

My Mum always has said that as long as she receives thank you letters and a couple of cards a year - normally birthday and post cards she'll always buy for her neices and nephews.

I think I'll do this with my neices and nephews, as I expect this is what my sister will do with my future children. It will probably be different with my H nephews as in their family they don't get any thing now their grown ups.

So in both our families there seems to be different unwritten rules that we'll probably go along with.
