My aunts stopped at 18 for my brother who was earning. But for me and my other brother (who both went to uni) it will stop at our 21st due to us not earning.

Although some aunts stopped at our 18th, but we were expecting all to stop to be honest!

We decided to stop buying presents for nieces and nephews at age 18, and doubled the value of this last present. Then youngest niece decided to have a birthday party for her 21st. We bought a good present for that, which we hadn't planned on.

As previous poster also said, we were hardly thanked for the gifts and sometimes you do wonder whether they are appreciated.

    Hi!

I'm very close to my nieces and nephew-they are young still now but i'll never stop getting them birthday and xmas pressies as i love giving them things! I dont like the idea of reaching 16/18/21 etc and then nothing....everyone stops bothering. I still think birthdays are important whatever the age, i know when theres a big family it might seem like too much hassle or the worry of money....but a small pressie with a lot of thought gone into it is still great in my eyes.

But saying that the people i buy for appreciate it, and thank me (and mean it!)...so i dont think twice about it.

My MIL still buys for her adult nephews and neices, some of whom now have children of their own, which she also buys for. She finds it expensive and has said to me that if she stopped buying for the adult she'd be able to buy more for their child. I've told her to stop but each time she gets talked out of it by her sister.

I also want the age to be at which I stop the same for everyone regardless of whether they are studying or working. I suppose my eldest neice is setting the precedent of it being 21 because of her liklihood to go to uni and I'd rather still buy for her whilst she's a hard up student. My sister has twins so I'd find it very hard to buy for 1 but not the other if one is still studying at 18+ and the other not. Someone mentioned Christmas after their 21st birthday, which is something I'd not thought of. Guess I'll see what's happening when eldest gets to that age. Perhaps I'll make it if finished uni I'll say not, if still studying say Christmas also age 21.
  • I stop/stopped buying for mine after the 18th birthday or when they stopped bothering to thank me which in some cases has been much earlier. I now have a great niece as well as a pile of grandchildren so I decided not to buy for the great niece or it will be never ending as I am one of 5 and have 5 kids myself as does one of my sisters. I send the nieces and nephews a chritsmas card though and invite them to the festivities.

It's not something I've ever thought about doing and I can't imagine I will stop getting them something (even if it's just a small thing).

Only one of them is over 18 at the moment but I still buy for her, birthdays and Christmas. Then again, on that side of the family, we only buy for the children which makes it easier I guess.

On my side, my one aunt still buys for me and I'm well into my thirties. The others stopped when I was 18. But then, I have always bought for the said aunt, but not any other aunts and uncles!

I suppose, having written all that, it depends on the relationship you have with them. If you only buy out of obligation then it is perhaps best to stop?

I have neices and nephews who are only 4 years younger than me and the youngest ones are 13 years younger. I don't buy presents for my neice who is only four years younger as she has 3 children of her own and I buy for them. Until she had them I bought for her. My other neice and nephews are 33,30 and 27 and I still buy for them. This year the nephews got presents that were for their houses and to share with their girlfriends, the single neice got her own present. Having said that they all buy for my son and for me. We do all get together over Xmas despite living in differnt towns (although not that far) and exchange presents on Xmas day or Boxing day and we always have done. If we weren't that close, then I probably wouldn't bother particularly if I didn't see much of them.

I have not thought about this as eldest nephew is only 6.

Mum (in her 60's) still receives Christmas, Easter and Birthday presents from her aunt.

My eldest niece is in her 20s and I still send her presents for Christmas and birthday each year. I hadn't thought about stopping especially since she lives abroad and I rarely see her. I've just found out that one of my children's aunts has declared their older cousins too old for presents although they're 17 and 20.
