Hi I would be grateful of any advice here. Its all new to me and google cant help
Basically want to OneSwich from Virgin to Sky next year
How will they connect me?
Is there a charge for it?
Theres only me using it for browsing etc So what speed do I need?
How soon do i notify virgin is it when I am out of contract?
Sorry to be ignorant but have been with Virgin for 15years so not up to new tech

There are a few possibilities, Sky use City Fibre and Openreach networks, so what you are offered will depend on who is available in your area , and if thats only Openreach , it could be Openreach FTTP ( full fibre ) or FTTC (fibre to the cabinet ) , if it’s FTTP it will be a new installation, if FTTC they may use an existing copper line that exists but obviously hasn’t been used for at least 15 years if that’s how long you have been with Virgin , Sky will tell you what to expect when you contact them .
Generally installation is free provided you take a multi year contract , as far as speed , if you don’t need the faster speeds take a low or the lowest speed on offer , if you don’t need faster speeds no point paying for them , although the pricing structure is it’s normally only a few ££ between tiers, but stick to your guns , if they say (for example) it’s only £5 to get twice the speed (but the low speed is fine for you ) over 24 months that’s an extra £120 , but they will try and sell what’s best for them , not what’s appropriate for you so be ready .
You don’t notify Virgin yourself , you leave that to the new provider to serve notice on your behalf, the optimum time to contact Sky (if that’s who you want to use ) , is around 14 days before the end of any Virgin minimum term , but TBH a few days before or after won’t make much difference, that’s assuming you are inside a minimum term contract , if you are already ‘out of contract’ contact Sky whenever you want and ask for a date when they can arrange to install their services (via Openreach or City Fibre ) and select the one that’s best for you.0 -
I was with Virgin for years and did not have a landline but switched to Vodafone (via Cityfibre) a couple of years ago - I did not have to pay a connection fee. I had also had a Virginmedia email account as well so had to set up an alternative (I went with gmail) in good time to be able to change any regular contacts. The Virgin retention team were totally disinterested and only offered me a £5/month discount (after just raising the cost by over £20), or "faster speeds". As I also live alone and do very little streaming (and no gaming) I jumped ship but on the day of the switch a very bored Virginmedia adviser called and offered to match Vodafone's price and when I declined he said he didn't blame me!1

Thanks for the replies it's not easy for me to understand. It's in the spring when my contract runs out so trying to find all the info I can beforehand. We have a full fibre box up the street does that mean we can get it? Also how does it get into the house is it from a telegraph pole? Sorry to be so ignorant but it's all new to me0

Not sure the information can be made any easier to understand, if you want to use Sky , then they will use either Openreach or City Fibre (depends on who is in your area ), if there are existing telegraph poles outside your house then it’s probably going to be overhead service , if no poles , then it will be underground service ….they may or may not be extra work required to get underground service you your house , if overhead they may need to put up a new overhead cable if one doesn’t exist or if FTTP is available, you find this out when you order with Sky,
If they say (for example) digging up your garden is needed to put a new cable in , obviously you can cancel if that’s not acceptable, knowing so far in advance of actually ordering is a little pointless, when you are ready to order , they will advise you what’s going to happen …without knowing what’s available in your area , it’s impossible to know exactly, all you can is general information.
In all circumstances you don’t advise Virgin , you contact Sky and they advise Virgin on your behalf, you know it’s going to plan if Virgin contact you (letter or email )explaining the last day of service, exit charges, ( if there are any) , and how to return the Virgin equipment (if they want it back ) , it’s called one touch switching , you only ‘touch’ the new provider, Sky in your case.
As far as notifications about reply’s on posts you have an involvement with , I’ve never had any notifications from MSE when there is a new reply or contribution to a thread I’m ’following’ , some other forums do that , I guess MSE don’t .1 -
