Whilst loss of sight (well loss of driving really) is quite high on my rather not list, losing my brain (dementia) is very much higher.
  • On the DVLA site there is no mention of the apparent change, a classic case of spurious information being pushed around the web?
Incidentally, not many realise that your optician appears to inform the DVLA when you need glasses to drive. Check column 12 on the back of your driving licence, 01 means you need glasses to drive!

And it is an offence to drive not wearing those glasses whether you are 17 or 77.  It is also an offence to drive without glasses that you are found not to be wearing even if an optician has not previously said you should.  As in ignorance is not an excuse so if you are driving you need your eyes testing at whatever age you are.  This is not just an "old people's" problem.
I have had eye tests for decades before I actually needed them because all my family have needed both reading & distance glasses before they were 25.  Don't be another odd one out & lose your licence because you thought you must be alright.

Not many realise ... probably because it's not true. The onus is on the driver to tell the DVLA.

Precisely, look at the domain where it was published, as I mentioned at the start of this topic.

No there has been no change - that does not mean you should not have your eyes tested to ensure you are driving safely.  It is your responsibility.  I am fairly certain that it also cancels your insurance.  Not a good place to be because if they discover that then even if it is the other persons fault, you become to blame, a bit like being under the influence.

My licence has "01", and I haven't notified DVLA that I need glasses to read a number plate at 20 metres... So where did the addition on my licence come from?
In fact I meet that requirement without glasses, although I have glasses to assist distance vision.

Maybe you wore glasses in the photo you used for your first photocard licence years ago?

Nowadays you use your passport photo, which has to be taken without glasses.

01 gives the Police something to do on light days as if they spot you driving without glasses they can check you meet the vision requirements.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Not so. My current passport photo has glasses, and the gov.uk website says: "Do not wear glasses in your photo unless you have to do so. If you must wear glasses, they cannot be sunglasses or tinted glasses, and you must make sure your eyes are not covered by the frames or any glare, reflection or shadow."
