No mask will protect you from carbon monoxide which will cause gradual loss of consciousness and then death.
Just as well no petrol car since 1992 has produced any CO, then.

One of the jobs of a cat is to oxidise CO into CO2.

Diesels have never had CO in their exhaust.

A tiny bit of oil burning off the exhaust manifold will smell bad, but won't have any negative health effects, and doesn't contain any CO either.

Do you have any evidence to back up that statement?
Uncontrolled burning on an unsuitable hearth is almost certain to produce carbon monoxide. It takes a lot of care to burn hydrocarbons and avoid generating CO.

    You're confusing CO and CO2.

CO comes from incomplete combustion due to insufficient oxygen.

That's why diesels don't have any (unregulated air) and why a few drops of oil burning smokily and smellily off a manifold has none. There is no shortage of oxygen. The result is complete combustion, and CO2.

The big risk of CO is with things like dodgy gas fires in enclosed spaces, with inadequate ventilation. Or an old pre-cat petrol exhaust in a garage...

CO is deadly precisely because it's unstable, and REALLY wants more oxygen in order to oxidise into CO2. If it gets into your blood, it then loves the oxygen it finds... Oxygen that your brain suddenly realises it quite liked having access to.

    I am not.

    Yes, that bit is correct.

This is where you've gone wrong.
Complete combustion doesn't result in smoke. Smoke is unburned material due to a lack of oxygen, and is always accompanied by carbon monoxide.
You can also get carbon monoxide without smoke, which has killed a few folk in recent years when they have brought barbecues into tents after use (and when they think the BBQ is out).

The smoke is particulates, same as diesel exhaust.

And, yes, barbecues IN TENTS. When the oxygen starts to run short in the enclosed environment.

    Particulates of unburned carbon.
What are they unburned? Because there isn't enough oxygen.
And whenever there's unburned carbon from a combustion process, there will also be carbon monoxide. You can't have combustion that produces carbon dioxide and carbon without also producing carbon monoxide.

My advice would be stop faffing about and over thinking things.

Ask your friends/ work colleague's/local Facebook pages  for recomendations for independent local trusted garages. Ring your chosen garage,  tell them the symptoms, book an appointment then take your car to them to diagnose and quote.
