Face filter for oil fumes when driving?
Hi,
My car has a slow oil leak from the cam head gasket.
Also the radiator fan isn't working.
The car is in a public car park and I have no garaging facilities.
I trying to find out from the Dacia forum what is the best way
to go about getting this fixed....(ie do you just firstly put it in
for "replace radiator fan fuse and coolant temperature sensor")...or
do you just put it in for "replace fan/temp sensor and fuse".....I mean
if you put it in for "diagnostic test" of the fan then surely they will just say its
all failed and send a full bill?....i mean, say its just the fuse thats gone...surely they will just bill for the fan/sensor and fuse anyway?
Anyway....when I am in a traffic jam, the car overheats, and the invisible oil
smoke fumes come into the car and they are giving me a really bad throat.
Will this mask be good to wear whilst driving?

As above - wasting money on a mask when you have to get it fixed sometime anyway.

I agree with both the previous posters.Don't waste time and money on a facemask when allowing your car to overheat risks major engine damage.If you're not able to fix it yourself, and the car's old enough to be out of warranty (which it sounds to be), find an independent garage and book it in to be fixed.N. Have you tried checking the fuse, if the car has one for the fan? That's a relatively straightforward job on most cars.

Get the fan fixed to stop overheating. (My crystal ball suggests the fan motor is the root of the problem)This won't stop oil leaking onto the exhaust and burning, so you need the leaking cam gasket fixed too.In the meantime, try putting the heater on recirculate (which will steam up the windows if you don't have air-con) to stop it drawing in fume laden air from outside. You can crack open the back windows for a bit of fresh air.Any mask would need to have an A2 organic vapour filter- which is activated charcoal to absorb the fumes, you will attract attention wearing one to drive!If there is visible smoke inside then a particulate filter is needed as well, combination mask filters are expensive- have a look on screwfix or toolstation websites.Mask filters A = organic vapour P = particulate.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Mask or no mask the fumes are detrimental to your health. You know what is wrong so just get it fixed1

My advice would be stop faffing about and over thinking things.
Ask your friends/ work colleague's/local Facebook pages for recomendations for independent local trusted garages. Ring your chosen garage, tell them the symptoms, book an appointment then take your car to them to diagnose and quote.0 -

That aside, c'mon... Seriously? Fix the car properly.
Fuses don't just blow. Things blow them by pulling too much current. Your fan motor is quite likely seizing, but five minutes of basic diagnostics will tell anybody competent exactly what the issue is.
Which engine is it? Changing the rocker cover gasket is probably a quick and simple job. You've probably spent more in oil, even before buying a facemask and the health risks, than it would cost to do it properly.
If you're regularly overheating the engine, don't be at all surprised when the head gasket fails, turning a hundred quid job into a thousand quid or more one.3 -
First off, check coolant level, if it's too low the coolant can't reach the coolant sensor.
Next check the fuse for the coolant fan.
Your owners manual should tell you which it is.
It's probably one in the fuse box under the bonnet, but without nothing the model or year I can't tell your which.
(later cars tend to be wired differently with main fuses protecting many things on one circuit often referred to as "Chains")
If you can't find it, check them all both inside and under the bonnet.
Pull them out one at a time and hold them up. If the wire inside the coloured plastic has broken, it's blown.
Replace with same style and colour fuse.
Within this fuse box will be a coolant fan relay (a small squarish black box) that is plugged into the board.
Check them and see any look damaged. Are any blown or swelled by excess heat around the terminals.
Reach in under the bonnet and see if the fan turns by hand easily.
That's about as much as you can do without tools.
You'll need to take it to a local garage if the above checks out.
If you have a simple diagnostic tool for the OBD2 port, you could check if the temp sensor is sending a signal, which would rule that in or out.
If it is, then it's from the sensor forward where the problem is.
IF you have to drive it to the garage, turn the heater on FULL heat. The highest setting.
Set the cabin recirculation to open (so the heater fan draws in air from outside the car).
Then crank the fan to full blast.
This help dissipate some of the heat from the coolant system into the cabin and help keep the engine temp down a bit.
But I don't recommend doing this for long trips, just to help you to the local garage.
As for the leaking cam cover, that should be an easy fix with a new gasket.
