Unfortunately most phones do not let you select which constellation the phone uses, the Russian and Chinese ones are less accurate than GPS.virgo17 said:

I am surprised your phone appears to pick up so many satellites, there are currently 30 or so GPS (USA) satellites deployed, 27 Galileo (European) ones, 24 GLONASS (Russian) and 30 BeiDou (Chinese). Assuming maybe 2/3rd of them are not “visible” due to being in relatively low orbits, it leaves a maximum of around 37 at any one time… assuming the phone picks all 4 constellations in the navigation app.2 -
Speed of getting an initial fix might vary depending on the phone's use of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GNSSvirgo17 said:My personal experience with the low end Motorola phones is that they do not have coverage of the full spread of GPS satellites. This is probably not an issue if you seldom use the phone to navigate as otherwise the phone is fine.

To the poster who comparred the Moto G5 with another. I took my G5 to Kos in Greece and GPS in kos town was poor and kept loosing position. My fiiends IPhone worked much better finding position where ever we went.

Samsung now seem to be offering 5 years / 5 OS updates on many of their lower price phones. I bought my A16 a month or so ago for £139.99 not on offer at Argos but they seem to pushed it up to £169.99 now, same as its replacement A17.0

Molerat I think your post highlights the update issue I was referring to exactly ....
No point in buying a £100 phone if it only lasts a few years when a discounted Samsung A17 is a far better option..... if you can wait out for that discount to appear on HUKD of course.

My wife had a Moto G5 some while back and the cost was around £120. At the time, iPhones were from around £800. For six times the price, one would expect some uplift in performance.solero said:To the poster who comparred the Moto G5 with another. Dinosaur sibling is never going to be spending money on an Apple product, ever.Current phone is several levels below the most recent android updates, which hasn’t particularly bothered them. They don’t drive, so don’t use satnav apps. They don’t do online banking.Thank you for all suggestions so far, they have been passed on.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
As an aside for @Frozen_up_north, my Nothing phone supports GPS, GALILEO, GLONASS, BDS, QZSS and can see 59 satellites in SW Scotland.0

I would agree with all of the above, having also bought one of these myself not long agoFrozen_up_north said:I’ve just bought a G35 from Argos, £99.99 and either in stock or next day.
Despite some negative reviews, it’s darn good for what it costs.
Really the only negatives I have so far found are:
In common with most Android phones accessing some functions is a “faff” until you get used to it, ie swiping down then across to access some menu items that you might expect to find in settings (I’m an iPhone user…).
The camera is mediocre in low light, not a patch on an iPhone 13. It doesn’t have image stabilisation as far as I can tell either.
Installing an app that uses GPS seems to need the phone powering off/on before the app will work, no idea why.
Given the Moto G35 is 1/6th the cost of the cheapest new iPhone model in the Apple Store, I can forgive the minor shortcomings 😎
I've always used Android so am used to the operation of it and agree that some things can be slightly clunky, but I suspect that unless you are used to much more high end phones (which it seems not in this case) they are not issues that you would really notice
For me, spending hundreds (some are even over a grand!) on a phone is a waste of money so I have stuck with the budget end Moto phones for several years and have been very happy with them0 -
Disagree that its pointless or no longer having security updates makes phones not "useful". They still retain the last update so its only new fangled threats that could have an effect. That too depends on how much personal data that matters the user puts on the device.. eg if not used for 'important' accounts etc, whats the worst that happens even with a security issue?BlueonBlue said:How many years of update do you get with the suggested Moto phones posted ?
Its pointless suggesting phones without noting how long they are useful for .
Considering the Sony Expedia z1 they own currently stopped receiving support 10 years ago..0
