Dinosaur sibling has Sony Expedia z1 compact on its last legs. Looking for something not too much bigger, happy to look at refurbs, fancy camera not needed, doesn’t want lots of bloat wear, budget £150 if possible. Really just wants it for calls and surfing. Suggestions please.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

That's brand new and would seem to fit her criteria.  With £50 left over.

  • Another option, for £149.99 is the Latte coloured Moto Edge 50 Neo - https://www.motorola.com/gb/en/p/phones/motorola-edge/50-neo/pmipmgz38mq?pn=PB310002GB

It gets security updates until August 2029, and is 154.1 x 71.2 x 8.1 mm compared to 127 x 64.9 x 9.5 mm for the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, so a bit bigger, but not many current phones are that small.

Moto G35 is also available from Argos, if that's more convenient than JL.

Its pointless suggesting phones without noting how long they are useful for .

    Security as above.

Original version is Android 14, will get just one update to 15 as far as I can see, so as 16 is just out the OS won't be the latest, but for a dinosaur user that probably won't be much of an issue.

I'd also suggest the Moto G series of phones.
Argos often seem to have the most competitive pricing.

I’ve just bought a G35 from Argos, £99.99 and either in stock or next day.
Despite some negative reviews, it’s darn good for what it costs.
Really the only negatives I have so far found are:

In common with most Android phones accessing some functions is a “faff” until you get used to it, ie swiping down then across to access some menu items that you might expect to find in settings (I’m an iPhone user…).

The camera is mediocre in low light, not a patch on an iPhone 13. It doesn’t have image stabilisation as far as I can tell either.

Installing an app that uses GPS seems to need the phone powering off/on before the app will work, no idea why.

Given the Moto G35 is 1/6th the cost of the cheapest new iPhone model in the Apple Store, I can forgive the minor shortcomings 😎

My personal experience with the low end Motorola phones is that they do not have coverage of the full spread of GPS satellites. This is probably not an issue if you seldom use the phone to navigate as otherwise the phone is fine.

Typically, from my home location my Xiaomi phone, using GPS Test, receives about 82 satellites whereas a Motorola G55 5G receives about 43.and is much slower in getting a fix.
