You can avoid these problems by not using PayPal. I don't use them.

There are several recent reviews like this, on Google. Maybe it was a site hack rather than a clone. Either way, 100% a scam.

"Please be aware that despite the best efforts of the store owner online customers are being scammed by someone else with a bogus website whereby you believe that you are purchasing from furniture liquidator in Liverpool however the bogus company force you to pay via PayPal and then attempt to empty your bank account. The owner is genuinely upset that his business name is being used to scam customers. and this is effecting his reputation. He too is a victim with his business identity being cloned. He has an action fraud reference number. I ordered a bin store online paid via PayPal I received email confirmation from a totally different company called APAYAS who have taken £2700 from my bank account they tried to take more. I have reported to PayPal and my bank."
Can you please send me a link to this post please? I’d like to contact them, as the FCA wants to combine all of the reports.

Not using PayPal doesn't reduce risk to zero. I think what's going on here is some kind of hack or scam. PayPal could have done better, but so could the bank. At the end of the day I would hope there are protections in place that mean the OPs money is refunded imminently.

These scams can happen with or without PayPal and I would again point out that I've used PayPal for 20+ years and have had zero problems in all that time. However, I have had money taken from me via vulnerabilities in the banking system.

I agree, I was very upset with the bank, but they said the only reason they let the money go was because it was PayPal. PayPal was told it was fraud on Friday evening, then Sat, Sun and Mon, from calls, messages etc. yet they still took another £3499 on Wednesday. The bank has at least accepted that they shouldn’t have let it go. PayPal is refusing to admit any fault. We will get it all back, I am sure. I’ve been with PayPal for 19 years, since 2006 and I admit I’ve had no issues, but given this issue with setting up automated payments without approval and the way they have handled it, I will be closing my account. This devastated us and many others and it wouldn’t have happened if PayPal had just informed us that they’d set up that automatic payment. The trust is gone.

Correction: The bank has had money taken from them due to vulnerabilities in the banking system. We shouldn't let them off the hook like that  It only translates to money taken from you if you're proven complicit or negligent.

PayPal has just contacted my husband to say he needs to pay £3499 into his account. They have him in debt now, as the bank recalled the Direct Debit. They aren’t happy that they took £7000 without any purchase or approval, they now want to chase the £3499 they couldn’t get, even though we reported the fraud to them last Friday and raised a dispute. They were clearly told, in writing, that the payments were not authorised, but still tried to take it and now they are chasing it. Two emails this morning already!

Personally I would get legal advice immediately. They should be giving you compensation yet they're trying to get you to pay for the known failure of their security systems. If you agree to the wrong thing you might end up losing money. They're worse than the scammers.

The post will be deleted today, so I won’t be able to update you all. I appreciate the advice Staffy, but I really wish I hadn’t posted to here. It’s made me feel worse, when I was just trying to make sure people were aware, so that it didn’t happen to them. I hate the way these members reacted. I won’t be posting here again.
  • Tell me about it. I've been on here 20 years under 3 or 4 usernames (that I either lost the details to or closed) since Martin Lewis used to post in the forums, and it's just the way it is.
