EES (Entry/Exit System) for most EU countries

I see that the 'everyone done by April' has gone by the board with countries allowed to suspend the system until October.
It's been a dreadful introduction.

Isn't there something else supposed to be coming in later in the year, costing 20 euros for under 70s?
We've just applied for a new passport for my OH so ours will both run out within weeks of each other so we will both get held up applying for new 'whatevers' on the same trips.

Yes, that's ETIAS, the equivalent of USA ESTAs.

And am I right in thinking they will be valid for 3 years also? Another reason I'm glad we're aligning our passport dates.

Your travel authorisation will be valid for three years or until the end of validity of your travel document - whichever comes first

I flew to Stockholm and back last August. At passport check the guy took a photo of me (which hadn't happened before) but I wasn't asked for a fingerprint at all. I don't know whether that photo has been stored/saved or not. I still got stamps in the passport,

Flying to Berlin next week but transitting via Rome Fiumicino (thanks EasyJet!). I'm assuming I will need to go through the EES on arrival or prior to departure? I did scan my passport and fingerprints on arrival in Berlin for New Year, and had my passport stamped but there was nothing on departure except for the manual stamp. I have 3 hours between flights and only hand luggage so hopefully will be ok …

If you've already registered then there shouldn't be any need to register again. Don't know whether you need to go through Italian immigration but I'd guess not (unless EasyJet make you pick up any hold luggage and check it in again).

'Shouldn't be any need' is the important phrase. I've not travelled since the EES system started but have read of people having to go through the entire process when travelling for second and subsequent times. Whether that is down to staff at airports not being familiar with the system and giving wrong information, I don't know.
