But they promised not to increase taxes for 'working people'  ......

If the rate of income tax increases, those pensioners who are taxpayers will also feel the sting.......

And the percentage of those over SPA who  pay tax continues to go up.....

Just bite the bullet and put 1% on basic rate and 2% on higher rate tax

triple lock will go within the next couple of years IMO and simply rise with CPI or RPI at most
Timing this with a more general introduction of CPI-H would make a lot of sense.

And she's come out today and admitted that she is "looking at" raising taxes. Which everyone already knew, but this is the clearest signal it's going to happen. No doubt with lots of finger pointing and telling us that the world has changed etc etc just to try and justify breaking a promise.

Still think swapsies on NI and income tax is a relatively easy win, assuming they are still happy to be gunning for pensioners.

I think you are right.  But what's the betting that she will still try to lay the blame on 'The Tory black hole'.

Indeed, hence my "finger pointing" comment. A proud tradition in politics...

Doesn't have to mean the headline taxes. Taxing pensions, whether when putting it in or taking it out could be prime pickings. I would be surprised if they already break their manifesto on directly taxing 'working people' but always ready to be surprised.
I'd be surprised if they do much to negatively impact any 20% tax earners too much. Something tailored towards those with a little more wonga will be on the cards, that's for sure.

Jezz - there are "forumites" on here who have very short memories and a complete lack of understanding of the deficite that the country has and how it ballooned under the previous administration,  as £'s were thrown around like confetti . Nodoubt there will be more "school ground" name calling of RR,  the debit needs to repaid, there is no easy way to achieve that,  the country does not have a magic money tree. it's easy to make election promises, but things are different when you are able open the books and look at the countries balance sheet.
Well that's me told. Feel much better about being shafted all ways up...

Well, I actually think that the reporting on this "looking at" comment has been spun rather unwisely by the press.

As it says, the Chancellor is "looking at further measures on tax" and "considering further measures on public spending".

I have to say that I think it is the very job of the Chancellor to consider with an open mind measures on tax and spending as the very core of the basis of setting out the Budget.
