I take it you don't drive on the M42 much… 6 Gantries and the speed goes up and down like a yoyo. It would flow
a lot better and far safer if they just averaged the speed and dropped the entire section to 40mph or 50mph.

You drive along and see the speed limit drop to 40 mph and it flows nicely but then it increases and then drops
again. I thought they were supposed to aid flow and set the speed to a nice average to keep the traffic moving?

I was on the M6 a while back and the overhead gantry said national speed limit applies and anyone accelerating
upto that may have received a ticket because it was still within the 50mph section at the time.

it depends what you mean by 'average'. The most common use of the term is the 'arithmetic mean', i.e. add alt the scores and divide by the number of people.

If that's what you mean, then your statement above is just plain wrong. For example, almost the entire population have more than the average number of legs, which is slightly less than two.

    You're wrong.

Most drivers are better than the average according to its standard definition (ie the "mean").

Your "understanding" is faulty in that it assumes that motoring offences are normally distributed across the driving population.

    They aren't.

Most drivers (more than "average") never commit any offences, but a relatively large minority are responsible for a disproportionately large number of offences.

This is why you see a surprisingly large number of posters here and on FTLA and on Legal Beagles who are on 9 points and have just received another NIP.

Most people are never in that situation and don't know anybody who is.

Hence most drivers are both correct and justifed in thinking that they are better than average.

This is true of accidents and insurance too. Once you've been involved in one accident insurers know that statistically - for whatever reason - you are more likely to be involved in further incidents
