That's a bizarre take on a 20mph limit. They reduce traffic speeds in areas where vulnerable pedestrians operate. In Wales, they had a 25% reduction in injuries/deaths after the 20mph limit came in. Here is an extract from a BBC article on 20mph limits in general -

"A pedestrian who is hit by a car travelling at between 30mph and 40mph is between three-and-a-half and five-and-a-half times more likely to be killed than if hit by a car driver travelling at below 30mph, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, a charity.

TfL looked at more than 100 roads in London that introduced 20mph limits between 1989 and 2013.

Analysing a period of three years before, and three years after, the limit was lowered, their research suggested that 20mph limits brought a 35% reduction in collisions, as well as a 34% reduction in serious injuries and deaths.

The number of child deaths on those roads fell from a total of four to one."

As this is an MSE site, travelling at the speed limit is likely to be cheaper for the driver in the long run than travelling above it.

the only people who object to 20 mph speed limits are thise who know they run the risk of getting caught speeding.

    Don't speed. don't get fined - simples!

Speed limits are not consistent, near me a stretch of dual carriageway through two villages, it has a 30 mph in one village, which extends past fields on both sides of the road, then increases to 50 mph past a church and houses on both sides of the road, then drops to 40 mph through the next village.

The village with the 40 mph limit has side streets with 20 mph zones, including near a school. The other village is 30 mph near/past the school and all the side streets are also 30 mph.

There is no obvious reason for the different speed limits, there have been serious crashes in the 30, 40 and 50 limit areas, including 2 separate fatal ones, one in the 30 mph and another in the 50. There was a 10 ton tipper truck that demolished the railings and crossing lights outside the school that has a 30 limit, it was during school time too.

It would be much easier to stick to speed limits if they were consistent.

"… It would be much easier to stick to speed limits if they were consistent…"

Surely the easiest and most practical way of sticking to speed limits would be if drivers paid attention to what they can see through their windscreens, and drove accordingly?

Anyway (forgive me if I'm mistaken!) but I thought you relied on Waze or something to keep you alerted to speed limits? If you do, why would they need to be consistnet?

    "… Lives saved = none… "

How can you possibly know that reducing the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph did not save any lives?

How do you know what would have happened if the limit had remained at 30?

My understanding is that pedestrians suffer significantly less serious injury when hit by a vehicle travelling at 20 mph than at 30 mph. (Duh!)

I have no problem with 20 mph zones or limits and I have no problem with 20mph outside schools

Yes, I do use Waze ever since getting one of those NIP letters for exceeding a 30 mph limit on a stretch of country road that doesn't look like a 30 mph limit, as there were just fields on each side… and I am aware of the street lighting requirement and not needing 30 reminder signs where there are street lights.

The issue is the idiotic and inconsistent speed limit changes that have no obvious purpose varying from one village to another on the same stretch of road, in some cases changing from 30 mph with fields to 50 mph with houses. While Waze now helps me avoid speeding, as does the built-in camera in the car that also alerts me, not all motorists have these aids to helping adhere to speed limits.

No, the issue is you ignoring the information that you admit you understood (as every driver should), and making assumptions that proved to be wrong.

You don't need any further (fallible) technological distractions, if you actually process the information you're receiving through the windscreen.

Blaming everybody else is not helpful, because it ignores the root cause of the problem.

Whenever I see threads like this, I remember that.

    • Most people think they are an above average driver.
    • That's obviously impossible. Half of all drivers must be below average.
    • So when someone criticises your driving skills, remember that they are probably not as good a driver as they think they are.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

The issue is the idiotic and inconsistent speed limit changes…

That’s where manufacturers of cars come in.

When designing their cars they have been thoughtful enough to provide a large transparent section of the body, just in front of the driver’s seat. This is so that the driver can see what's ahead outside of the vehicle.

The people who are responsible for construction and maintenance of the highways have also helped out by placing quite prominent signs – circular with big numbers in the middle, usually one each side of the road – denoting the point at which a speed limit changes.

I think you may have identified the issue incorrectly.

So wrong, the people that object maybe 100% law abiding with speed limits but know the facts that the people that
run the speed awareness courses lobbied for lower limits. I got caught speeding in the 80's it was a bright red
whale tailed Sierra XR4i all kitted out with the cameras.

I also know for a fact that the incident I mentioned the speed limit would not have made any difference because
the driver was double the posted speed limit outside a school at school time. The only difference a 20mph zone
would have done is made his speed 3x the limit.

Did you see the questions asked before they lowered the speed limit? Do you want to be hit at 20mph or 30mph…
Loaded questions that force you to answer one way.
