Used the trainline app many times, no issues.

You'd think if the trainline app was secretly signing up unknowing customers to expensive subscriptions, it wouldn't have a 4.7/5 rating on app store with nearly ~750,000 reviews.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thetrainline&hl=en_GB

I suspect it was that cashback offer box you get at the end of a transaction - it's frurstringly common, even with big names like Argos, MyProtein, etc.

Unfortunately it's incredulous that the OP has signed up normally, without clicking any pop up or offer, when seemingly no-one else has. Either that or the subscriptions are nothing to do with their trainline purchases (and they're just being associated because they happened around the same time).
I have been asked by a doctor to supply receipts for train fairs but as I am using the trainline app, as soon as they are used they are deleted. How can I ge around this. There should be some kind of bank statment system.
Log on to your account - go to 'My bookings', then go to 'Past trips' then click 'Manage Booking' then near the top there is a link for 'Expense Receipt' (this was on desktop but similar process on app).

The train line app does not ask you to verify bank details

In fact the way you pay on trainline is via debit or credit card - you enter the card number and exp date as a 'saved card' and nothing is 'validated'.

When you purchase your ticket you select the stored card and enter the cvv to.purchase.

ps the trainline app is a green square with rounded corners and the word 'train' written in white
    It is.
When you enter your card details they will authorise the card with a zero amount. If bank declines, you will get a message card declined.

They may well do this in the background but that is not what the op said

The op said " I am taken to a page that tells me that they need to verify my bank details and informed me that a transaction of £0.00 will take place and I WILL NOT BE CHARGED FOR THIS. "

There is no such page and this message does not occur when adding a card.

Could be relating to a 3rd party retailer offering a discount such as Shoppers Direct who do partner with trainline.

Did the OP perhaps click on a box that took them to a screen like this? I've just renewed my railcard on the official site, and clicking on a pop up after the transaction completed brings me to a screen which asks for my card details.

Yes, I'd get £20.50 back if I entered my details and proceeded, but that one off discount would sign me up to a service at £18.00 a month.

I think that's exactly what happened.
I've seen that pop-up when purchasing train tickets and buying on eBay.
    Always ignored it.
It's really not a scam. Or a fraud.

Pretty sure the OP is not coming back anyway.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Never bad to point out that something isn't a scam, con, rip-off or a fraud.
