I think the tour operator should be paying any fee.  They have requested you move, not the neighbour and they are protecting the other people but not naming them.
If the tour operator won't waiver any fee then I would go and remind the tour operator that the other people are very welcome to pay the same fee not to go on that date.

I would also be upfront and call this out at the 1st meal, but thats me. I wouldn't want to be on holiday knowing someone had been such a weasel!

Go, you know the neighbours, or are they not going now? It will be time to find out if those others in the group are worth getting friendly with. OR have the group found someone else for your places.
  • I presume your neighbours are going, so you will know them anyway. The others sound a snobby bunch but if you really want to go I would do so, you don't have to mix with them, I would ask to be placed at a table with other passengers, not this group, if they ignore you, you can enjoy it yourselves, it is not as if it is a rowing boat!! I wonder if this is a group who pay a weekly/yearly fee (like a club) and that is why they feel annoyed that you are having the holiday for the same price as them and maybe going on onshore excursions etc. We have organisations where I live that go on trips and if there are any empty seats they are offered to whoever would like to join them as long as they pay their share. It is really up to you to decide what YOU want to do, if you do decide to go then you could tell the organisers that you are going unless the group who do not want you there pay the cancellation or moving fee. The organisers of the group, are not the company that runs the river cruises, so I don't know how they can tell you not to come, you have entered a contract by paying your fare. Good luck.

I'd go and spend time with more interesting and polite people from other places. These boats typically hold 300ish+ passengers so shouldn't be hard to avoid those small minded individuals. Your friends may be put in an invidious situation (who do they spend time with) but that's their issue not yours. Just make sure you have fun!

Nothing to do with the neighbours. Either go if there will be other strangers, or if the tour operator / group want the boat to themselves then they can contribute to any change fees between them.

Any holiday you go on there will be people you do not know.

There is no information given as the type of group or the purpose of the cruise, which may or may not be relevant.

    It's a MMD.
MSE strip out almost all the details to provide 'a point of debate'.
I really can't see what the originator of the 'dilemma' gets out of this.

Serves you right for keeping up with the Jones's. Never involve other people in your life, this should be your first rule for saving money.

Assuming that you are on a separate booking in your name? Then I would still go and you don’t have to spend time with them on the ship, you can just do your own thing.
I think whoever has asked you to cancel/move your booking sounds stuck up.

I think the original poster should fill in the details such as how many passengers this ship/boat potentially carries,  how many are in this group that are objecting to the poster. Has the poster booked through this group or independently through the holiday company. They seem like they have put this post on and then disappeared.  Will they even be reading the responses? Is it all a fake?
